THE EVOLUTION OF STEVE JOBS
If Apple’s rise depended on the standard Steve Jobs clichés, what are we to make of its dominance now? Time to revisit—and correct—the myth.

Wunderkind. Jerk. Innovator. Tyrant. (All of the above.) Even now, almost four years after his death, it’s hard to read a story about Steve Jobs that doesn’t rely on these kinds of generic labels to explain his character, that doesn’t paint him as an obstreperous ingrate who never changed, who cowed coworkers and competitors with an almost magical "reality distortion field."
It’s a strange phenomenon, given the extraordinary story of his life: A callow businessman, a young college dropout whose behavior was so divisive and undisciplined that he was exiled in 1985 from the company he founded, turns around and becomes the radically effective visionary leader of a company that became the most valuable enterprise on earth. Surely this can’t be explained by a set of stereotypes that haven’t changed for three decades.
Three years ago, fellow journalist Brent Schlender and I set out to try to take the long view of Jobs’s career. I had worked behind the scenes as an editor on many Apple stories for both Fast Company and Fortune. Brent knew Steve well. For more than two decades, he reported on him for The Wall Street Journal and Fortune, interviewing him dozens of times. The two became close, albeit within the bounds of a journalist/source relationship; Steve regularly introduced Brent as his "friend." Brent believed that Jobs had changed more than any other businessman he had covered.

Prodígio. Idiota. Inovador. Autoritário. (Ou tudo ao mesmo tempo.) Mesmo após quase quatro anos de sua morte, é difícil ler uma reportagem sobre Steve Jobs que não use rótulos genéricos para ilustrar sua personalidade, que não o apresente como um sujeito ingrato e indisciplinado que jamais mudou seu modo de ser, intimidando colegas de trabalho e concorrentes com o quase mágico “campo de distorção da realidade”.
É um fenômeno curioso, tendo em conta sua incrível história de vida: um empresário inexperiente (Jobs abandonou a universidade e foi expulso da própria empresa em 1985 por indisciplina e desavença) dá a volta por cima e se transforma num notável líder visionário daquela que se torna a companhia mais valiosa do mundo. Obviamente, isso não pode ser explicado por estereótipos de três décadas atrás.
Há três anos, eu e meu colega jornalista Brent Schlender resolvemos examinar a carreira de Jobs numa perspectiva futura. Como editor da Fast Company e da Fortune, trabalhei nos bastidores de muitas matérias sobre a Apple. Já Brent conhecia bem Steve. If you don’t know much about Cuba, Airbnb’s recent announcement that it has begun booking rooms there sounds pretty unremarkable. After all, Airbnb operates in more than 190 countries, and its offerings are as diverse as they are plentiful. In the "castles" category alone, there are more than 600 possibilities. Cuba is hardly its most exotic locale.
But consider this: Cuba has, according to Internet freedom watchdog Freedom House, only about a 5% open Internet penetration rate, or access to Internet not controlled by the government. And its economy still runs almost entirely on cash. The idea of Airbnb—a company that provides an online marketplace for housing and processes digital payments—catching on there sounds almost absurd.
How did such a digitally driven startup launch in a country where most people have no daily Internet access and no bank account—and with more than than 1,000 hosts, no less?

Se você não sabe muita coisa sobre Cuba, o recente anúncio que o Airbnb começou a reservar quartos no país pode parecer banal. Afinal de contas, o site está presente em mais de 190 países e seus serviços são variados e generosos. Há mais de 600 opções apenas na categoria “castelos”. Cuba está longe de ser o destino mais exótico.
Mas é bom levar em conta que, segundo a Freedom House, organização que monitora a liberdade na Internet, apenas 5% dos cubanos têm acesso à rede, ou seja, navegam pela Internet sem o monitoramento do governo. E a economia do país depende quase exclusivamente de dinheiro vivo. O objetivo do Airbnb – plataforma online de aluguel de imóveis por temporada e de pagamento digital – de se popularizar na ilha pode parecer um absurdo.

When Andre Geim discovered graphene, he went from winning the Ig Nobel prize to the Nobel. Giles Whittell meets the quirky Russian physicist who may be the new James Watt

A year before the fall of the Soviet Union, in December 1990, a young Russian physicist arrived at Nottingham station with very little money and very poor English. He had a burly look, a wide grin and “an interesting but not world-shaking piece of work” to his name on thin-film superconductors. This was the assessment of Peter Main, a professor at the University of Nottingham who met him at the station. Freed from the Soviet Union by glasnost, Main’s visitor was determined to build a career in Europe and determined to make an impression. He was on a six-month fellowship, and for most of those six months he worked hundred-hour weeks. He tried to make his fellow researchers laugh, though not with much success. Main remembers that he caused an important physics-department computer to crash, and that “after about two weeks I was the only person left who was prepared to work with him”.
Looking back, Professor Sir Andre Geim wondered if it was his accent that annoyed his new colleagues. It is still strong, with the guttural “r” that in Russia often betrays ethnic German roots, but Main believes what rubbed people up the wrong way was simpler and deeper—Geim’s urgent, conspicuous need to prove himself. “He had some trouble fitting in in a social way,” Main says, “which is interesting because later on he became the social centre of life in his department.”
The department where Geim has since come to roost, at the University of Manchester, specialises in a field of science that was not fashionable even ten years ago but is now a magnet for many of the best brains on the planet. The Condensed Matter Physics Group occupies a couple of floors of a functional block two miles east of Old Trafford. There Geim’s team study the extraordinary properties of two-dimensional materials that no one knew existed until he revealed them to the world.

Em dezembro de 1990, ano anterior ao fim da União Soviética, um jovem físico russo desembarcou na estação de Nottingham quase sem dinheiro e arranhando algumas palavras em inglês. Corpulento e com um sorriso largo no rosto, levava no bolso "um trabalho interessante, porém convencional" sobre supercondutores de película fina. Foi essa a impressão de Peter Main, professor da Universidade de Nottingham que apanhou o colega na estação. Salvo da União Soviética pela glasnost, o hóspede do professor Main estava determinado a construir uma carreira na Europa e causar boa impressão. Em quase todos os seis meses de sua bolsa, o físico russo trabalhou cem horas por semana. Sem muito sucesso, Geim tentava fazer outros pesquisadores rirem. Main lembra quando o pesquisador russo conseguiu travar um importante computador do departamento de física, e que "depois de duas semanas eu era a única pessoa preparada para trabalhar com ele".
