ANNA
(im Schlaf) Papa! PAPA!!!!!!
Anna wird von der Mutter an der Schulter gerüttelt.
DOROTHEA
Anna-Kind... Alles in Ordnung. Wir sind gleich an der Grenze.
Anna bemerkt Schweißperlen auf Dorotheas Stirn. Der Zug hält. Man hört Türen klappern und Schritte. Schließlich öffnet sich mit Schwung die Abteiltür und ein energischer deutscher Grenzbeamter in Uniform erscheint.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER
Die Pässe, bitte.
Er sieht Dorothea und die Kinder prüfend an.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER (CONT’D)
Wohin soll’s denn gehen?
Dorothea versucht, locker zu bleiben.
DOROTHEA:
Nach Zürich. Wir besuchen Verwandte.
Der Beamte guckt kurz auf. Skeptisch.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER
Mitten in der Schulzeit..?
Dorothea schluckt.
DOROTHEA:
Ein Todesfall.
Der Beamte guckt, nickt und besieht sich die Pässe genau. Kerzengerade sitzt Dorothea auf ihrem Sitz und knautscht mit den Fingern ihre Handtasche, in deren Stoff ein Kamel eingewebt ist. Ihr Griff ist so verkrampft, dass sie das Gesicht des Kamels zerdrückt, was Anna registriert.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER
Kemper...
Die Mutter wird blass.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER (CONT’D)
Kemper. Der Name sagt mir doch was.
Er denkt nach, sieht Dorothea durchdringend an.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER (CONT’D)
Helfen Sie mir mal auf die Sprünge.
Dorothea versucht, so leichtherzig wie möglich zu erscheinen.
DOROTHEA
Ich wüsste nicht... der Name ist nicht selten.
Der Mann zögert, klappt schließlich die Pässe zu, reicht sie Dorothea zurück.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER
Doch, doch. Das beschäftigt mich jetzt wieder den ganzen Tag...
Er fasst kurz an den Schirm seiner Mütze, geht zur Tür.
DEUTSCHER GRENZBEAMTER (CONT’D)
Nun ja. Eine gute Reise, gnädige Frau. Kinder.
Anna sieht ihre Mutter an, die endlich wieder atmet.
ANNA
Mama, du zerquetscht ja das Kamel.
Sie deutet auf Dorotheas Handtasche.
DOROTHEA:
Bitte? Ach ja.
Dorothea lockert den Griff, pustet sich eine Locke aus der Stirn. Sie bemerkt, dass Annas Stirn schweißnass ist.
DOROTHEA
Max. Gib mir doch bitte mal ein Handtuch aus dem Koffer.
Sie deutet auf die Gepäckablage. Aus halb geschlossenen Augen sieht Anna, wie Max Dorothea ein Froteehandtuch hinhält.
Translation - English 29 TRAIN COMPARTMENT - INTERIOR/DAWN 29
Later: Dawn. Anna is tossing and turning in her sleep. She is dreaming, clutching Heimpi’s handkerchief in her hands.

Dorothea shakes Anna’s shoulder.

Anna girl... It’s allright. We’re almost at the border.
Anna notices that Dorothea’s forehed is sweaty. The train stops. We hear doors being opened and footsteps approaching. Finally the door is opened energetically and a forceful German border guard in uniform steps inside.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD
Passports, please!
He scrutinises Dorothea and the children.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD (CONT’D)
What’s your destination?
Dorothea tries to stay calm and appear relaxed.
DOROTHEA:
Zurich. We’re visiting relatives.
The Border guard looks up briefly. He is sceptical.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD
In the middle of the school year..?
Dorothea gulps.
DOROTHEA:
A death in the family.
The border guard nods and scrutinizes the passports. Instinctively Dorothea sits up straight as a poker in her seat. She clutches her handbag, which has a camel woven into the fabric, so tightly that her knuckles go white and she is squashing the camel’s face. Anna registers this, alarmed.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD
Kemper...
Dorothea turns pale.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD (CONT’D)
Kemper. That name rings a bell.
He contemplates the matter and gives Dorothea a penetrating look.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD (CONT’D)
Why don’t you jog my memory?
Dorothea tries to seem light-hearted.
DOROTHEA
I don’t know… it’s a fairly common name.
The guard hesitates, but then he closes the passports and hands them back to Dorothea.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD
Hm, This will haunt me all day…
He gives a tiny salute and walks to the door.
GERMAN BORDER GUARD (CONT’D)
Well, can’t be helped! Have a good trip Madam! Children.
Anna looks at her mother, who is finally able to breathe again.
ANNA
Mum, you’re squashing the camel.
She points at Dorothea’s handbag.
DOROTHEA:

She points at the luggage rack. Through half-closed eyes Anna sees Max hand Dorothea a terry-cloth towel.

Source text - German Umgeben von grünen Wäldern, saftigen Wiesen und langen Alleen (auf denen man wunderbar Fahrrad fahren kann) liegt der kleine Bauernhof Mullewapp. Im Sommer ist es hier so warm, dass sogar der große Traktor still steht und man am besten unten am kleinen See die Beine ins Wasser baumeln lässt und den Grillen zuhört. Im Winter ist alles von weißem Schnee bedeckt. Dann ist es ganz still, und man kann warmes Licht durch die Fensterscheiben leuchten sehen.
Jetzt haben wir Frühling und Waldemars Geburtstag steht vor der Tür. Doch bevor gefeiert wird und der große, leckere Geburtstagskuchen auf den Tisch kommt, will es die Tradition, dass die Mullewapper den Frühjahrsputz erledigen. Alle freuen sich auf das Fest und ganz besonders den Kuchen und so packen alle mit an.
Translation - English Mullewapp is an idyllic little farm surrounded by green woodlands, lush meadows and long country lanes, which are just perfect for cycling. In the summer it is so hot, that even the big tractor is allowed to take a break. By far the best thing to do on those summer days is to sit at the edge of the small lake, cooling one’s feet in the water, and to simply listen to the crickets chirping. In wintertime, everything is buried under a soft layer of snow; the whole world seems silent and welcoming lights can be seen emanating from the windows.
But now it’s springtime and Waldemar’s birthday is coming up. However, tradition dictates that the Mullewappers finish their spring cleaning before they can celebrate with a wonderful feast and – most importantly – the delicious birthday cake. Everyone is looking forward to the party and the cake and therefore they are happy to muck in.

They eventually reach the far end of the lake where they pull the canoe onto the shore.

It's just a short journey through the jungle back to my village.
As they continue into the jungle, Luigi's head swivels around with every noise.
LUIGI
Does anybody else have the feeling like we're being watched?
He clutches his cluster of lucky charms as a precaution.
SHI LA
You're not that interesting. Trust me.
LUIGI
But it seems like everything around here is big and loud and angry!
A monkey drops out of a tree and at them. Luigi smiles, feeling relieved.
LUIGI (CONT'D)
Oh, it's just a monkey! Hey little fella!
The monkey and his hands at Luigi.
MARCO
I think he likes you, Luigi!
Luigi smiles and waves at the creature, jingling his charms. The monkey cocks his head in the way dogs do when something catches their interest.
LUIGI
He likes my charms!
JAMBA
Er, I wouldn't do that, Luigi.
Before Luigi can respond, the monkey scampers over and grabs his charms and leaps up into the trees.
LUIGI
Hey! Give those back!
Luigi starts to give chase, but then they hear a jungle full of excited monkeys and . He thinks twice.
JAMBA
The monkeys are known for taking what isn't theirs - especially food. They can be a real nuisance.
SHI LA
A nuisance who takes all the food? We have one of those too.
She looks directly at Luigi, but he ignores her.
MARCO
Come on Luigi, we've angered enough animals today.
LUIGI
No way, Marco, I'm not going anywhere without my charms!
Shi La taps him on the shoulder and hands him a small stone.
SHI LA
Here.. It's a good luck rock.
Luigi smiles.
SHI LA (CONT'D)
When you feel nervous, you can use it to knock some sense back into that head of yours.
LUIGI
Very funny Shi La. Very funny...
Luigi makes a sour face and drops the rock as they walk away. But then, he reconsiders, and goes back for it, rubbing it gently as he catches up.

Hat außer mir noch jemand das Gefühl, dass wir beobachtet werden?
Er hält vorsorglich seine Glücksbringer zum Schutz hoch.
SHI LA
So interessant bist du nicht. Glaub’s mir!
LUIGI
Aber es scheint als wäre hier alles groß und laut und wütend!
Ein Affe plumpst aus einem Baum herab und macht . Luigi lächelt erleichtert.
LUIGI (WEITER)
Ach, es ist bloß ein Affe! Hallo, mein Kleiner!
Der Affe macht und vor Luigi in die Hände.
MARCO
Ich glaub’ du gefällst ihm, Luigi!
Luigi lächelt, winkt dem Affen zu und klimpert mit seinen Glücksbringern. Der Affe legt den Kopf schief, so wie es Hunde tun, wenn etwas ihr Interesse geweckt hat.
LUIGI
Dem gefallen meine Glücksbringer!
JAMBA
Ähm, das würde ich nicht tun, Luigi.
Ehe Luigi noch antworten kann, kommt der Affe angeflitzt, schnappt sich die Glücksbringer und klettert behände auf einen Baum.
LUIGI
Hey! Gib’ die sofort zurück!
Luigi will den Affen verfolgen aber da hört man einen ganzen Dschungel voller aufgeregter Affen und . Da überlegt er es sich anders
JAMBA
Die Affen sind bekannt dafür, dass sie alles an sich reißen, was nicht ihnen gehört – besonders alles Essbare. Sie können extrem lästig sein.
SHI LA
Hm, jemand Lästiges, der alles Essbare an sich reißt? So einen haben wir auch.
Dabei sieht sie Luigi direkt an, aber der ignoriert sie einfach.
MARCO
Lass gut sein, Luigi! Wir hatten es heute schon mit genug wütenden Tieren zu tun.
LUIGI
Kommt gar nicht in Frage, Marco. Ohne meine Glücksbringer gehe ich nirgendwo hin!
Shi La klopft ihm auf die Schulter und reicht ihm einen kleinen Stein.
SHI LA
Da... das ist ein Glücksstein.
Luigi lächelt.
SHI LA (WEITER)
Wenn du nervös wirst kannst du damit auf deinen Holzkopf klopfen. Toi, toi, toi!
LUIGI
Sehr witzig, Shi La! Wirklich sehr witzig...
Luigi verzieht das Gesicht und lässt den Stein beim Weitergehen fallen. Aber dann besinnt er sich und holt ihn sich doch. Während er den anderen hinterherläuft reibt er sanft an dem Stein.

The sun sits high above this small Bavarian village. Rolling green fields, surrounded on all sides by densely forested mountains.
A vill age of around 1000 inhabitants, the white church spire rising high above the rooftops. White-washed Bavarian houses, an ancient aristocratic Manor, and a sprawling red brick, chimneyed, factory.
INT. SCHOOLROOM – DAY
The local village school. Small class, a young female teacher Helene Haberl (27) points to the board - where two almost identical sentences: ‘Let’s eat Grandma.’ & ‘Let’s eat, Grandma.’
She draws a circle around the extra comma—
FRAU HABERL
As you can see, punctuation saves lives!
The children laugh, Flo (Florian Maurer,8) too - but his gaze lands on the clock. Exactly 13 hr. Flo stretches his neck to glance out of the window - he’s looking for something, the school bell rings, he excitedly gathers his books and rushes out.
INT. VON STENGEL GLASS FACTORY – DAY
Heat. Steam. Smoldering, red hot, fluid glass. A montage of men at work. Back breaking, unbearable hard work - but to watch each of the men, including the glassblower Andreas Maurer (Flo’s father, 38), it’s obvious that they are proud, and highly skilled workers.
EXT. SCHOOLHOUSE – CONTINUOUS
Flo rushes towards the school gates to where Lassie, a beautiful Collie dog, waits for him. Lassie jumps up excitedly, Flo’s hugs her. Frau Haberl approaches.
FRAU HABERL (OS)
So busy rushing off to Lassie, you forgot your test paper, Florian.
FLO
(takes it)
Sorry Frau Haberl.
FRAU HABERL
(strokes Lassie)
Don’t you want to look at what mark you got?
Flo glances at his paper. A wide grin crosses his face.
FRAU HABERL
Congratulations.
(sensitive)
When’s the big move?
FLO
Tomorrow. It’ll be strange, not being in our old house.
FRAU HABERL
It can be exciting too. My Dad worked for the army when I was little,
so we moved homes every year. I saw it as an adventure!
Flo thinks about this, then smiles--
FLO
Yeah! It kind of is I guess.

He rushes out of the gate, Lassie hot on his heels.
Translation - German AUSSEN. LUFTAUFNAHME/WALD IN BAYERN/ DORF – MITTAG
Die Sonne steht hoch im Himmel über dem kleinen bayrischen Dorf mit circa 1000 Einwohnern. Weite grüner Felder werden auf allen Seiten von dicht bewaldeten Bergen umsäumt.
In der Mitte des Dorfes ragt der weiße Kirchturm hoch über die Dächer hinaus. Neben den sauber geweißelten bayrischen Häusern gibt es noch einen alten Adelssitz und eine große Fabrik aus roten Backsteinen mit einem mächtigen Schornstein.
INNEN. KLASSENZIMMER – TAG
Eine kleine Klasse in der Dorfschule. Die junge Lehrerin, Helene Haberl (27) zeigt auf die Tafel. Dort stehen zwei fast identische Sätze: ‘Komm, wir essen Oma.’ & ‘Komm, wir essen, Oma.’
Sie zeichnet einen Kreis um das zweite Komma.
FRAU HABERL
Wie Ihr seht, kann die korrekte Zeichensetzung Leben retten.
Die Kinder lachen - Flo (Florian Maurer,8) lacht ebenfalls aber dann schaut er auf die Uhr. Es ist genau 13:00. Flo reckt den Hals, um aus dem Fenster sehen zu können - offenbar hält er nach etwas Ausschau. Da läutet die Schulglocke und er packt aufgeregt seine Bücher und Hefte in den Schulranzen und rast zur Tür hinaus.
INNEN. GLASFABRIK VON STENGEL –TAG
Hitze. Dampf. Rot glühendes, flüssiges Glas.
Eine Montage von Männern in Schutzkleidung bei der Arbeit - einer schweißtreibenden, körperlich angespannten, unglaublich anstrengenden Arbeit. Aber wenn man den einzelnen Männern zusieht - unter Anderem dem Glasbläser Andreas Maurer (Florians Vater, 38) erkennt man sofort, dass sie qualifizierte Fachkräfte sind - und stolz auf ihre Arbeit.
AUSSEN. SCHULE – FORTLAUFEND
Flo rast auf das Schultor zu, wo sein wunderschöner Collie Lassie schon auf ihn wartet. Lassie springt ihn voller Freude an und Flo umarmt sie. Frau Haberl kommt dazu.
FRAU HABERL (OFF)
Jetzt hast du’s wieder nicht erwarten können, deine Lassie zu sehen und
hast völlig vergessen, deine Klassenarbeit mitzunehmen, Florian.
FLO
(nimmt die Klassenarbeit)
‘Tschuldigung, Frau Haberl.
FRAU HABERL
(streichelt Lassie)
Und die Note interessiert dich gar nicht?
Flo schaut die Klassenarbeit jetzt erst an. Er grinst freudig.
FRAU HABERL
Gratuliere!
(einfühlsam)
Wann findet denn der Umzug statt?
FLO
Morgen. Wird komisch sein, nicht mehr in unserem alten Haus
zu wohnen.
FRAU HABERL
Vielleicht wird’s ja auch ganz spannend. Mein Vater war bei der
Bundeswehr, deshalb sind wir jedes Jahr umgezogen als ich klein war.
Ich habe das immer als Abenteuer gesehen.
Flo denkt darüber nach und lächelt dann.
FLO
Ja! Ist es irgendwie schon.

Bio
I have always been aware of the importance of translation, as I grew up in a multi-lingual environment. When it came to choosing a degree course, my passion for literature overrode my love of translation, but I did place an emphasis on literary translation during my studies, and contributed to the translations of various volumes of short stories.
After my studies, I embarked on a career as a VFX and Animation Production Manager/Producer. However, I always took on freelance translation assignments alongside my production work as a welcome change from the daily routine, specialising in scripts and dubbing scripts for film and TV.
In the hectic and stressful environment of production, the slower pace and the autonomy of translation provided a much-relished respite.
In 2018 I decided to retired from production work and to focus more exclusively on translation. Since then I have since broadened my translation horizons to include subtitling work and expanded my areas of expertise to include Ayurveda, Wellness, Food and Nutrition, Travel, History and the Arts.
