Portuguese to English: Text for an exhibition in the Schist Villages General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Translation - English Finding new avenues for the development of territories requires creativity, strategy and planning based on holistic and multidisciplinary knowledge. It depends on the establishment of a modus operandi based on respect for the people who still live there, as well as their memory. Only by making use of a broad framework of relationships between villages, their inhabitants and new actors, can we generate a project-building dynamic based on responsibility and the skills of doing, existing, and being.
The Schist Villages have summoned the knowledge and creative potential of Design schools, enabling students to immerse themselves in the reality of these villages. This direct relationship with people, landscapes and culture was at the center of the thought process regarding the identity of these places, becoming the main source of material inspiration for the artifacts presented here.
In a world full of so many options, it is fundamental to awaken the pliable minds of young people, in order to shape change. By bringing them closer to a place that bets on design as its main differentiating factor for progress, The Schist Villages are positioned as an entity for hosting, for living, and for fulfillment.
Agriculture carries an anthropological, sociological, ecological and economic potential to inspire a connection between the communities and the places they inhabit. From it, the development of the cultural, material and immaterial matrix takes place, in which a great part of our identity is inscribed.
The Schist Villages are a living laboratory that instills in itself an experimental role, from which actions take place based on three components:
Strategic, Social, Product
Three acting components:
Strategic
To position the "Aldeias do Xisto" (Schist Villages) brand as a benchmark of collective action in the territory.
Social
Call for new actors to the region.
Product
Create goods and services that are representative of the local identity.
Reinventing local culture, alongside its inhabitants - that is the Schist Villages' course of action, in order to create social and economic value in their territorial mission.
To this end, we invited 9 design schools and 22 craft workshops to bring their knowledge and skills to the actual reality of our villages and, collectively, pave the way for a new economy capable of producing meaningful goods and services, with memory and identity.
The "Agricultura Lusitana" (Lusitanian Agriculture) project continues the positioning of the collaborative culture between management and design, a powerful catalyst within organizations that stimulates creative thinking, the development of initiatives and the work of teams that generate value in a social context.
Lusitanian agriculture represents and nourishes itself from the best of Portuguese rural culture. It is from the population's memory and ingenuity footprint that this project develops, based on the link Craft+Design+Identity.
The memory that will forever remain etched in each and every participant of this project is that of a plethora of emotions experienced from socializing and bonding in these villages.
"This project has brought us closer to our culture through the people and, therefore, has made it more human."
Daniela Lopes, student of the Design degree at Departamento de Comunicação e Arte of Universidade de Aveiro
"The biggest advantage of this project is the freedom it grants us for questioning the fundamentals of design and also the freedom to seek those answers."
Fábio Pereira, student of the Design degree at UBI - Universidade da Beira interior (Covilhã)
"This project was not just about the employment of my skills. The contact I had with the people from the Schist Villages and their way of life has sparked something inside me, it has transformed me ethically and made me think about my values and options."
Mário Roda, professor of Design in ARCA EUAC- Escola Universitária das Artes de Coimbra
"Objects must incorporate an emotional component, make the object personal, triggering a reaction in people, rekindling memories, stimulating and crossing references."
Joana Silva Moreira, student of the Design degree at ESAD - Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos
The Craft+Design+Identity link is a transforming force that repositions artistic crafts and stimulates the restructuring of the social fabric towards the renewal and permanence of the culture of places.
