English to Spanish: Aims and Values in a University General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Aims and Values in a University
The previous section argued that certain practices are distorting universities’ research and teaching priorities; however, this assumes that we have some conception of what those priorities ought to be. Some people have thought that the very nature of a university em bodies a set of central scholarly goals, the continued achievement of which constitutes the university’s supreme good. However, it would be a mistake to saddle ourselves with such views here. Let us think specifically of some of Australia’s long-established institutions, and concentrate on these questions: What ais and values should these universities pursue? What aims and values for these universities should governments approve, protect and nourish?
There are many of them. No doubt universities should seek to train professional people needed in the working of the economy. No doubt they should seek to work in partnership with industry to devise new products and services which Australians can sell overseas. But these goals are not at the heart of what universities should be doing. As in any large enterprise, soe aims and values have a central role, supporting and giving coherence to the others. Three of these spring to mind. First, universities should provide a liberal education for their students. Second, they ought to engage in research aimed at increasing our depth of understanding of the world, including human beings and human activity: we seek not merely an accumulation of items of information, but theoretical insight. Third, they should contribute to their society’s critical self-evaluation.
