Même chose pour les pièces de monnaie rares et les vins fins qui ont eux atteint respectivement une hausse de 225 % et 153 %. En revanche, l’indice FTSE 100 n’a augmenté que d’environ 130 % sur la même période.
« Les ventes aux enchères enregistrent des records », explique Mohammad Kamal Syed, responsable des marchés mondiaux chez Coutts. « Le mois dernier, une Aston Martin DBR1 a été vendue pour 22,6 millions de dollars. »
Les actifs alternatifs – les investissements qui ne correspondent pas aux catégories normales d’actions, d’obligations ou de biens

L’année dernière, les instruments de musique rares ont enregistré les meilleures performances avec une hausse de 16,4 %, souligne le rapport Coutts. L’année précédente, ils avaient tout de même connu une baisse de 11 %.
Les vins fins ont connu une croissance intéressante de 2005 à 2011 avec l’émergence d’acquéreurs chinois. Les mauvaises performances ont été de retour entre 2011 et 2015 lorsque les Chinois se sont retirés du marché. Ces deux dernières années, les vins fins ont tout de même enregistré une nouvelle hausse de 27 % pour les meilleures millésimes.
En revanche, la pire performance a été enregistrée dans l’art. Les Maîtres anciens et l’art du XIXe siècle ont vu leurs prix plonger de 42 %, Par contre, l’art d’après-guerre et l’art contemporain a augmenté de 64 % et les oeuvres chinoises 35 d’art traditionnel ont augmenté de 95 %.

Alternative assets – investments not belonging to the regular categories of stocks, bonds, or commercial goods – can be a good method of diversifying your portfolio since their value is not affected by the larger movements of the stock market. In 2008, during the financial crisis, Coutts’ classic car index increased by 11.4% while the FTSE 100 dropped by almost 30%.
However, according to experts, alternative assets are more risky and therefore more suited to those who already have more traditional assets such as stocks, bonds, cash, and goods, and who have a larger margin to cover any losses.
Furthermore, the alternative assets market is not regulated and therefore is not governed by traditional legal protections. Another problem is that alternative assets cannot be resold at will, and they do not generate revenues for their owners.
Last year, rare musical instruments achieved the best performances with an increase of 16.4%, the Coutts report points out. All the same, the previous year they experienced a drop of 11%.
Fine wines saw an interesting growth from 2005 to 2011 with the emergence of Chinese buyers. Poor performances reemerged between 2011 and 2015 when the Chinese withdrew from the market. During the two last years, fine wines still recorded another increase of 27% for the best vintages.
Meanwhile, the worst performance was reported in art. The old masters and art of the 19th century saw their prices plunge by 42%. By contrast, post-war and contemporary art increased by 64%, and traditional Chinese works of art increased by 95%.

I am a freelance translator working primarily from French into English, but also Spanish into English.
I became interested in translating while pursuing my undergraduate degree in history, where I translated historical documents from French into English. During that time I also completed the Cours de Civilisation Française at Paris - Sorbonne I. Following the completion of my bilingual masters degree at NYU's Institute of French Studies, where I specialized in French history, I lived in France for several years. I tutored in language (both French for English speakers and English for French speakers), music, history, and other humanities. I am currently enrolled in the University of Toronto's French to English translation certificate program.
I live in New York City, where I am fortunately able to continue pursuing professional translation. Although my primary area is standard French, I also have some experience translating documents from Haitian French. In my free time I love reading academic books on history and other humanities, studying new languages, cooking, and performing in early music ensembles around the city.
