Source text - English The core characteristics of this disorder are grandiosity, lack of empathy, and an insatiable need for admiration and approval. To put this less clinically, the disorder involves these enduring attitudes: “I am bigger, better, and far more superior to you or anyone else; I have no understanding of or interest in grasping my impact on you except insofar as you can feed my ego or support the beliefs I have in myself.” The DSM-IV says this pattern is evidenced by early adulthood and is apparent across contexts—a quality of all personality disorders. Just to be certain we all know what this disorder entails, let’s run down the diagnostic criteria as listed in the DSM:
1. Has a grandiose sense of self often seen in an exaggeration of achievements and abilities
2. Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, and love.
3. Believes he is special and can only be understood by others who are special (an important point as we consider systems)
4. Demands excessive admiration
5. Feels entitled and expects favors and compliance; allows no disagreement and demands “submission” (note the biblical word)
6. Is interpersonally exploitive; uses others to achieve his ends; feeds off others
7. Lacks empathy; cannot identify with others’ feelings
8. Is envious of others or believes they are envious of him because of his superiority or specialness
9. Is arrogant, haughty, proud in behavior and attitudes2
In order to qualify, a person must meet at least five of the above listed nine criteria. In brief, the mantra for NPD is, “It is all about me and don’t you dare forget it.” Let’s consider the disorder a bit more deeply. Note that someone with this disorder takes his bearings from the externals. Look at the list: achievements, accomplishments, success, power over others, adoration, affirmation, and approval. The narcissist presents his grandiose self, not his real self, to others, so as to gain those things because they are his food and drink, his oxygen. Indeed, he believes they are necessary to his existence, they are owed to him, they are his right, and if they are denied, rage follows.
Translation - Ukrainian Типова характеристика нарцисичного розладу особистості – претензійність, помпезність, брак емпатії та ненаситна потреба у визнанні та похвалі. По-народному кажучи, нарцистичний розлад передбачає приблизно таке ставлення до власної персони: «Я більший, я кращий, я значно вищий та вагоміший порівняно з вами та будь-ким узагалі; не хвилює мене і взагалі не цікавить ваша думка про мене чи моє до вас ставлення, якщо тільки це пов’язане з моїм еґо або коли ваша реакція підспівує моїм переконанням, важливим особисто для мене». Згідно з Діагностично-статистичним посібником із психічних розладів (DSM-IV), паттерни цього розладу спостерігаються на ранніх етапах дорослішання та проявляються у найрізноманітніших контекстах, що притаманно усім розладам особистості. Щоб чітко окреслити сутність нарцисичного розладу, наведу критерії його діагностики, відповідно до Посібника (DSM-IV):
1. Особа із нарцисичним розладом особистості має величне сприйняття власної особистості, часто сприймає себе крізь гіпертрофовану призму власних досягнень та здібностей.
2. Значне місце в її свідомості займають фантазії про безмежний успіх, владу, грандіозність, бездоганність і любов.
3. Особа із нарцисичним розладом переконана у власній винятковості, тому зрозуміти її можуть такі ж виняткові люди, як і вона (це важливий аспект, якщо розглядати людину в контексті систем – церкви, організації тощо).
4. Домагається того, щоб інші захоплювалися її персоною.
5. Почувається «уповноваженою» – такою, що має особливе право поводитися відповідним чином; очікує преференцій та поступливості з боку інших; не припускає жодних незгод та вимагає цілковитої «покори» (зверніть увагу на типовий біблійний термін).
6. У міжособистісних взаєминах експлуатує людей; використовує інших для досягнення власних цілей; наживається на інших.
7. Не має емпатії; не може збагнути людських відчуттів та емоцій; не може ідентифікувати відчуття інших.
8. Заздрить іншим або вважає, що вони заздрять їй через її верховенство або особливість.
9. Поведінці та ставленню до людей та процесів притаманна грубість, нахабство, гордощі2.
Щоб належати до категорії осіб із нарцисичним розладом особистості, людина мусить мати принаймні п’ять із дев’яти перелічених вище критеріїв. Стисло, мантра нарциса така: «Тут усе обертається навколо моєї персони; не смійте навіть припускати іншої думки».
Копнемо глибше. Як уже з’ясували, особа із нарцисичним розладом особистості «харчується» зовнішнім. Звернімо увагу на перелік джерел, що її «годують»: досягнення, здобутки, успіх, влада над іншими, захват і овації, утвердження за рахунок інших, визнання. Нарцис несе у світ своє грандіозне «я», приховуючи справжнє. Він завойовує людей та їхні реакції, мов харч, необхідний для його існування, мов кисень, яким дихає. Нарцис справді вважає, що люди чимось йому завдячують, вони зобов’язані його «годувати», а він «має право» на них. Коли ж відмовляються грати за його правилами, буде їм непереливки.
