Source text - German Was geschieht, wenn Reisen Angst und Stress bedeutet? Wenn man fliehen muss, weil das eigene Leben in Gefahr ist? Der jüdische Philosoph Walter Benjamin floh im September 1940 vor den Nationalsozialisten ins nordspanische Portbou, weil er hoffte, sein Leben retten zu können. Als er zurückgewiesen wurde, beging er in dem Grenzort, an dem „niemand ihn kannte“, wie er in einem Abschiedsbrief sagte, Selbstmord.
Elf Schülerinnen der 12. Klasse des Berliner Rosa-Luxemburg- Gymnasiums wollen mehr über Walter Benjamin erfahren. Sie haben Benjamins verschwundene Tasche nachgestaltet und mit ihren Fragen gefüllt. Per Zug reisen die jungen Frauen von Berlin nach Portbou. Dort gehen sie Benjamins Weg über die Pyrenäen und folgen seinen Spuren in Portbou. Die Exkursion wird von Akademie-Präsidentin Jeanine Meerapfel, dem Leiter des Bertolt- Brecht-Archives und des Walter Benjamin Archives Erdmut Wizisla, sowie dem Regisseur Matthias Luthardt begleitet. Vor ihrer Reise durchstreifen die Schülerinnen Berliner Bezirke, die mit Benjamin in Verbindung stehen; besuchen das Archiv, lesen einige seiner Schriften und machen sich in Filmen über sein Leben kundig.
Translation - English What happens when travelling means fear and stress? For instance, when you are forced to flee because your life is in danger. On the run from the National Socialists in September 1940, the Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin set off for Portbou in northern Spain in an attempt to save his own life. When he was turned away, he committed suicide in the border town, where – as he said in his farewell letter – “nobody knew him.”
Eleven young women from Berlin’s Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium want to learn more about Walter Benjamin. They have recreated Benjamin’s lost suitcase and filled it with their questions. The students will travel from Berlin to Portbou by train, where they will follow Benjamin’s path across the Pyrenees and retrace his steps in Portbou. The excursion will be accompanied by Akademie Pres- ident Jeanine Meerapfel, Erdmut Wizisla, the head of the Bertolt Brecht Archives and the Walter Benjamin Archives, as well as by film director Matthias Luthardt. Before their trip, the students are going to explore the districts of Berlin connected to Benjamin; visiting his archive, reading some of his texts and learning about his life through films.

In diesem Märchen geht es um den richtigen Zeitpunkt. Der letzte Königssohn ist allein dadurch erfolgreich, dass er zur richtigen Zeit erscheint, offenbar ohne es zu wissen.
Wie oft erleben wir das: an einer bestimmte Stelle in unserem Leben bewegt sich nichts. Eine Organisation widersteht hartnäckig allen Versuchen, sich verändern zu lassen. Unsere Suche nach einer neuen Perspektive endet immer wieder in einer Sackgasse. Ein Projekt stagniert im Gestrüpp der Anforderungen. Irgendwo liegt das Dornröschen und wartet nur auf den einen Kuss, damit alles wieder zum Leben erwacht, und der Weg dorthin ist versperrt. Wir kämpfen bis zur Erschöpfung und ziehen uns Blessuren zu, bis die Widerstände uns zum Aufgeben zwingen.
Die Lösung: zur rechten Zeit am rechten Ort
Und irgendwann, wenn man die Hoffnung schon fast aufgegeben hat, kommt jemand oder etwas, dem sich die Türen wie von selbst öffnen. Die Dornenhecke weicht zurück, wir können wie in einem Wunder direkt auf das Schoss zugehen und den Schatz finden. Auf dem Weg sehen wir noch die Überreste der vielen anderen, die es nicht geschafft haben.
Es ist leicht zu glauben, dass die Vorgänger Versager oder alle vorherigen Versuche Fehlleistungen waren; und noch leichter zu glauben, dass man selbst aufgrund seiner Besonderheit den Preis errungen hat. Das Märchen sagt uns jedoch, dass die einzig erforderliche Qualifikation ist, als Prinz den Versuch zur rechten Zeit zu wagen.
Translation - English The task: Waiting for 100 Years
This fairytale is about correct timing. The last prince is only successful because he appears at the proper time, apparently without knowing it.
How often have we experienced this: at some point in our lives, nothing is moving. An organization stubbornly resists all attempts to change it. Our search for a new perspective reaches a dead end over and over again. A project stagnates in the thicket of demands. Somewhere lies Sleeping Beauty, just waiting for that kiss to bring everything back to life, but the path to her is barred. We fight to the point of exhaustion, we sustain injuries, until the obstacles force us to give up.
The solution: the right place at the right time
And one day, when we’ve almost lost all hope, someone or something shows up for whom the doors open up as if by themselves. The thicket retreats, and miraculously we can approach the castle directly and retrieve the treasure. On the way there we see the remnants of the many others who have tried and failed.
It’s easy to believe that those who came before were failures or that all previous attempts were blunders; and even easier to believe that we ourselves have won the prize due to our own unique talents. But the fairytale tells us that the only qualification required is to take your shot at the right time.

Source text - English E-WERK Luckenwalde to host 2021 Brandenburg premiere for Sun & Sea (Marina) in iconic disused Bauhaus swimming pool
In Spring 2021, E-WERK Luckenwalde will present Sun & Sea (Marina), the Golden Lion Award Winning opera-performance that represented Lithuania at the 58th Venice Biennale, by Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė and Lina Lapelytė. Members of the German and international media should be in touch to express interest about press tickets or tours.
The work will be presented in the spectacular disused Bauhaus Swimming Pool adjacent to E-WERK and powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity, Kunststrom. Audiences will be able to support a completely unique example of sustainable exhibition making and 28 artists and cast members through an innovative crowdfunder, at a pivotal moment in history when culture needs to find grassroot alternatives to survive. All donations will go towards the production of Sun & Sea (Marina), including the sand and deckchairs, in exchange for rewards including the original Sun & Sea (Marina) merchandise from the 2019 Venice Biennale and new Bauhaus X EW beachwear by Studio Lorenz Klingebiel and runway fashion designer Chloe Struyk. In Luckenwalde, 30 mins from central Berlin, the disused 1928 Bauhaus swimming pool is situated next door to E-WERK and first built to make use of the power station’s excess heat energy and as a leisure activity for the station's workers. The project will reactivate the historical swimming pool with energy derived from Kunststrom waste for a new generation and set of socio-political-environmental parameters; the sense of impending climate change catastrophe being particularly pertinent in an empty swimming pool.
Sun & Sea (Marina) comes to E-WERK Luckenwalde as part of POWER NIGHT 2021, guest-curated by Lucia Pietroiusti, Curator of General Ecology at the Serpentine Galleries, Shanghai Biennale and the Curator of Sun & Sea (Marina) in Venice in 2019. Sun & Sea will be presented from May 1 with admission free but ticketed.
Curated by Lucia Pietroiusti, POWER NIGHT will also feature new commissions from artists including Karrabing Film Collective (in collaboration with Serpentine Galleries and Shanghai Biennial), Isabel Lewis, Himali Singh Soin (in collaboration with Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin and Serpentine Galleries) and Tabita Rezaire. Further exhibition and performance details will be announced later this winter. For the first time, an exhibition of a selection of artists’ works will remain in situ after POWER NIGHT until 18th July 2021. E-WERK’s artistic programme for 2021 will also be announced shortly.

Die Arbeit wird im spektakulären stillgelegten Bauhaus-Stadtbad neben dem E-WERK präsentiert und vollständig durch 100% erneuerbaren Kunststrom betrieben. Das Publikum unterstützt somit eine einzigartige Form nachhaltiger Ausstellungsproduktion sowie 28 Schauspieler und Ensemblemitglieder durch eine innovative Form des Crowdfunding – und das in einer historisch entscheidenden Situation, in der die Kultur neue Möglichkeiten des Überlebens suchen muss. Es wurde 1928 zur Verwendung der überschüssigen Wärme des Kraftwerks und als Freizeitmöglichkeit für die Arbeiter gebaut. Das Projekt reaktiviert das historische Stadtbad mit aus Kunststromabfall erzeugter Energie und soll wegweisend für eine neue Generation soziopolitischer und ökologischen Rahmenbedingungen sein, zumal die drohende Klimakatastrophe beim Anblick eines leeren Schwimmbeckens besonders spürbar ist.
Sun & Sea (Marina) ist Teil der POWER NIGHT 2021 im E-WERK, gast-kuratiert von Lucia Pietroiusti, General Ecology Kuratorin in den Serpentine Galleries, Kuratorin der Biennale Shanghai und von Sun & Sea (Marina) 2019 in Venedig. Source text - German Den Ausgangspunkt für den Wettbewerb bilden die städtebaulichen Veränderungen entlang des II. Bauabschnitts an der Karl-Marx-Allee. Diese Situation bietet mit ihrer besonderen Geschichte und den aktuellen Planungen ein spannendes Terrain für ortsbezogene künstlerische Projekte, die neue Perspektiven auf dieses Gebiet ermöglichen.
Den Neubauten entlang der ehemaligen Stalinallee, insbesondere dem II. Bauabschnitt (realisiert 1959-1971), ging ein Abriss von noch gut erhaltenen Gebäuden aus den 1930ern Jahren voraus, die als nicht mehr modern empfunden wurden. Das Konzept für die Bebauung beinhaltete verschiedene ikonische Bauten der sozialistischen Nachkriegsmoderne, wie das Kongresszentrum, das Haus des Lehrers, das Kino International sowie eine Mischung aus vorgelagerten Pavillonbauten und Wohnbauten. Der II. Bauabschnitt wurde so zu einem Modellprojekt, das mit zwei Kinos, dem topmodernen Hotel Berolina, Restaurants und Cafés (wie dem Café Moskau oder der Mokka-Milch-Eisbar) hohen Wohnkomfort bieten sollte. Die Straße wurde bis zum 7. Oktober 1989, dem 40. Jahrestag der Gründung der DDR, als zentraler Ort für Ehrenparaden der Nationalen Volksarmee und der politischen Massenorganisationen (wie der FDJ oder dem FDGB) genutzt. Zu diesen Anlässen, wie etwa zum Republikgeburtstag oder zur Maiparade, flankierten Tribünen für die Ehrengäste die Karl-Marx-Allee.
Nach 1989 gab es erneut eine stadtplanerische Kontroverse um diesen Bauabschnitt. Der originäre Gebietscharakter einer offenen, aufgelockerten, großräumigen und durchgrünten Stadt ist trotz einiger Eingriffe in den letzten Jahren bis heute erhalten geblieben. Das gesamte Gebiet ist bis heute als städtebauliches Ensemble erlebbar und stellt ein wichtiges Zeugnis des DDR-Städtebaus dar.
Translation - English The competition was initially inspired by the changes in the cityscape along the second section of Karl-Marx-Allee. Both the setting’s unique history and the architectural plans currently being made for it provide an exciting terrain for site-specific artistic projects offering new perspectives on the area.
The new buildings along what was once Stalinallee, particularly those in its second section (constructed between 1959 and 1971), were preceded by the demolition of well-preserved buildings from the 1930s that were no longer considered modern. The new development concept included various iconic structures of socialist post-war modernism such as the Kongresszentrum (bbc Berlin Congress Center), the Haus des Lehrers (“house of the teacher”), and the Kino International (Cinema International) as well as a combination of pavilions and residential buildings alongside them. Thus Karl-Marx-Allee’s second section became a model project meant to offer a high level of residential comfort with its two cinemas, the ultra-modern Hotel Berolina as well as restaurants and cafes (such as Café Moskau or Mokka-Milch-Eisbar). Until the 40th anniversary of the GDR’s founding on October 7, 1989, the street was a central location for its military parades and for mass political demonstrations held by groups such as the socialist youth organization or the federation of German trade unions. On these occasions, such as Republic Day or the May Day parade, bleachers for guests of honor were set up on either side of Karl-Marx-Allee.
After 1989, there was renewed controversy surrounding the development of the second section. In spite of several more architectural interventions over the last few years, the area’s open, relaxed, spacious and generously landscaped original character has been preserved to this day. The entire district can still be experienced as an urban development ensemble and functions as an important testament to urban planning in the GDR.

Growing up in a bilingual, creative and literary household between Germany and the United States, I have been writing in English and German since my early childhood. After recieving my Bachelor of Arts from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, I returned to Germany to complete my Master of Arts in Literary- and Art Theory at Potsdam University. Completing degrees focused on arts and culture in both languages has perfected my mastery of both German and English for the artistic, academic, and the larger cultural contexts. Having lived and worked long-term in both countries, I am also familiar and fluent in more colloquial levels of both languages.
Today I translate and edit largely texts for artists and art institutions such as proposals, grant applications, artistic/experimental essays, exhibition wall texts and catalogues, press releases as well as academic papers. Occasionally I also draw from my professional experience in other fields to translate legal briefs, texts on human resources, and horoscopes.
