Il y avait un jour une aiguille à repriser: elle se trouvait elle-même si fine qu'elle s'imaginait être une aiguille à coudre.
«Maintenant, faites bien attention, et tenez-moi bien, dit la grosse aiguille aux doigts qui allaient la prendre. Ne me laissez pas tomber; car, si je tombe par terre, je suis sûre qu'on ne me retrouvera jamais. Je suis si fine!
—Laisse faire, dirent les doigts, et ils la saisirent par le corps.
—Regardez un peu; j'arrive avec ma suite», dit la grosse aiguille en tirant après elle un long fil; mais le fil n'avait point de nœud.
Les doigts dirigèrent l'aiguille vers la pantoufle de la cuisinière: le cuir en était déchiré dans la partie supérieure, et il fallait le raccommoder.
«Quel travail grossier! dit l'aiguille; jamais je ne pourrai traverser: je me brise, je me brise». Et en effet elle se brisa.»Ne l'ai-je pas dit? s'écria-t-elle; je suis trop fine.
—Elle ne vaut plus rien maintenant», dirent les doigts. Pourtant ils la tenaient toujours. La cuisinière lui fit une tête de cire, et s'en servit pour attacher son fichu.
«Me voilà devenue broche! dit l'aiguille. Je savais bien que j'arriverais à de grands honneurs. Lorsqu'on est quelque chose, on ne peut manquer de devenir quelque chose.»

The Darning Needle
One day, there was a darning needle. It was so thin that it imagined it was a sewing needle.
"Now, be very careful and hold me tight," said the needle to the fingers that were holding it. “Don't let me fall, because if I fall, I will never be found. I'm just so small!”
“Don't worry," said the fingers, grabbing the needle tightly.
“Look! I'm coming up behind you!" cried the needle, pulling a long thread after it, but it didn’t have a knot in it.
The fingers moved the needle towards the cook's slipper. The leather was torn in the upper part, and it needed to be repaired.
"What a terrible job for me to do!" said the needle. “I will never be able to get through this. I will break and break…" And indeed, the little needle broke. "Didn't I say this would happen?!" she exclaimed. “I am much too thin.”
"Oh, she isn't worth anything now," sighed the fingers, still holding on to her.
The cook’s fingers began to make the needle a wax ball to be put at the top of it, using it to tie her scarf.
“Well then! I have become a broach!" said the needle. “I always knew it would work out. When we are something, we cannot fail to become something.”
