Source text - French Depuis l’aube des temps, l’homme s’est ingénié à mettre par écrit autant les textes de loi, les décrets de ses pharaons, de ses rois et de ses présidents que ses amours, ses histoires, ses légendes ou ses pensées les plus folles. Pour rédiger et conserver ces écrits, il passa de la pierre aux peaux de bête, du papyrus au papier, pour finalement se servir du support informatisé.
Durant la période industrielle, l’ère du papier battait son plein, et l’écriture devint alors de plus en plus accessible au peuple. La fréquence des échanges de correspondance augmentait sans cesse. Les œuvres littéraires se multipliaient et l’apparition des journaux commençait à alimenter les conversations quotidiennes. Toutes ces petites innovations écrites firent exploser les cadres d’un domaine jusque là réservé à une minuscule élite de scribes. À un point où, plumes et crayons ne suffisant plus, il fallait autre chose, quelque chose comme une machine.
Flairant l’aubaine, en 1873, le fabricant d’armes Remington changea momentanément son fusil d’épaule et commercialisa un brevet vieux de plus de 100 ans. La machine à écrire fut alors disponible pour tous et profita au 20e siècle tout entier. Ainsi, la machine à écrire fut sans conteste l’un des pivots qui contribua directement à l’apparition de notre société du savoir et des communications. Translation - English Since the beginning of time, man has used different innovations to put words into writing – whether they are laws and decrees of Pharaohs, kings and presidents or words of love, history, legends or simply the wildest of ideas. To write and to preserve what was written, man passed from stone to animal skins, from papyrus to paper, to ultimately use software.
During the industrial period, with paper production being at its height, writing became more and more accessible to the common people and thus letter exchanges became increasingly common. Literary works multiplied and newspaper articles started to become daily conversation pieces. All these small innovations burst the framework of a domain which, up to that point, had been reserved to a small elite, the scribes. There came a point in time when feathers and pencils were no longer sufficient and a more powerful tool or machine was needed.
In 1873, the arms manufacturer Remington spotted the golden opportunity and, temporarily deviating from his profession, commercialized the patent, which is now well over a hundred years old. This way, the typewriter became available to the public and was used during all of the 20th century. The typewriter can undoubtedly be called the cornerstone which contributed directly to the creation of today's society of knowledge and communication.
