Source text - English Type I interferons (IFNs) are a family of homologous helical cytokines which elicit strong
anti-viral and anti-cancer activity and provide the first line of defense of the human body
against pathogens long before the adaptive immune response. Consequently, IFNs are
the human proteins most widely used in the treatment of several diseases (e.g. cancer and hepatitis C).
