Bio

Translations should never sound translated.

I am on a crusade to rid the world of franglais.

A self-confessed word nerd, my career began in 1996 and has always been focused on language and turning the unknown into the familiar.

After completing a BA in French and an MA in Applied Linguistics, I spent 12 years teaching ESL and EFL in Boston, Paris, Chicago and New York.

This included a seven-year stint in France where I became truly fluent in the French language and culture. Besides teaching at two grandes écoles (engineering schools) and numerous companies, I also produced English-language spots for Japanese TV and co-founded a little translation firm called SOS English. Skills acquired include:

  • Explaining the complex mechanics of language
  • Detecting the nuances of diverse cultures
  • Designing, preparing and implementing multi-level curricula
  • Marketing for business in a foreign language
  • Researching, producing, interviewing for audio/video deliverables
Upon returning to the United States in 2001, I spent the next four years in New York City learning the ropes as a translation and summary project director. Some of the projects I managed involved producing foreign-language radio ads for major US groups. This skillset has proved to be an invaluable contribution to my freelancer toolbelt. More skills:

  • Recruiting and managing talent for large projects
  • Developing and coordinating new document products
  • Complying with ISO 9001 standards
  • Editing and proofreading for publication
  • Working on and with teams
Then one day in 2005 (October 1, to be exact), I dove into the deep end and followed my dream of becoming a full-time professional French>English translator and transcreator. There is nothing in this world I would rather be doing! While contracting work from agencies and direct clients, over the years I have had the great honor to write translations and copy for some of France's top brands: Chanel, Dior, BIC, Azzaro, Cartier, Hachette, etc.

To read more about my professional background, please see my LinkedIn profile. My areas of interest and expertise are diverse, but here are the top fields I specialize in:

  • Luxury and consumer goods
  • Marketing and advertising
  • E-commerce and SEO
  • Corporate communications
  • Culinary arts
  • Horticulture, agriculture, herbalism
