A new figure that is emerging now from the technological underground, but that most people would consider mere “plumbing”, is the tag. A tag is an electronic address attached to every bit of electronic content. It is being used as the basic infrastructure by which people make connections with each other and everything on demand.
Keywords and tags are the basic units, the building blocks of the shared cognitive environment that is rapidly developing around the world and on our screens. Tags disambiguate and mark each item individually while keywords bring up the necessary associations in pertinent connections on demand.
What is a tag? A tag is the soul of the Internet. It is the address of any packet that is the basic content of any message. The message is divided into packets, the packets have an address and an order of appearance and they reconstitute themselves at the other end. Tags and mobile telephones constitute an environment of total surround of information wherever we may be. By tags, both the local and the global, both the specialist and the generalist, both the historical and the actual, all of these things come on demand from any part, from any point in production of anything. The world as hypertext, that’s the era of the tag.
The era of the tag is also the era of Everyware, as Adam Greenfields has named the presence of sensors all around us in the urban and cyberspace settings, We are thus surrounded and bathed in this information environment of which we produce some and are traceable because of it. We let information about us in various databanks automatically. And of course we also receive a huge amount of it that we reprocess. In the words of Richard Lanham:
The center of the computer revolution, as a new system of human expression, lies in its central polyvalent code. The same code that expresses words can generate images or sounds. Information can be moved from one sensory modality to another while still being driven by the same data. This choice of expressive means naturally generates stylistic self-consciousness.
The Augmented mind depends in the way our private mind depends on synapses. The almost infinitely scalable interconnectivity of everything (See Neil Gershenfeld’s remarkable study on this matter). For intelligence to function, pretty well everything must be available and accessible on demand. Hence all the contents of our minds are in some fashion interconnected.

Why Malta, if not for the clear blue seas and skies, and mild weather that is to be found. The sea is an ever inviting place to explore, relax or even to practice scuba diving. The weather is perfect for the winter holiday during which one can explore the countryside with its lanes, narrow passages, small fields, characteristic farmhouses and other countryside architectural heritage. It is the right time to visit the various small villages, with their modern houses, but with a medieval core.
