Hello all,

I have just learned that long-time member Helena Diaz del Real has passed away. Helena joined ProZ.com in 2005 and was an active contributor in term help and the forums. Many of you have no doubt met her at conferences and powwows, where she was a bubbly, positive, and entertaining presence. She will be missed.

Helena Diaz Real RIP Jan 27, 2017

I'm very sorry to hear this, Jared. I remember her well from the Prague conference a few years ago, and, as you say, she was a bubbly and entertaining person. Didn't you get her singing at that one, as well?

I met her in person in Porto Jan 27, 2017

I wasn't at Prague, Mike, but at Porto in 2013 (http://www.proz.com/pages/Porto-conference-2013?page=live_coverage ) I clearly remember a long, trailing group of translators leaving the post-conference powwow and wandering the streets at night in search of a place to get drinks, and Helena moving up and down that line, animating everyone's progress (or in some cases, lac... She was quite a character.Collapse

WHAT??? Jan 27, 2017

This is terrible news! Helena was very young, as far as I can remember! I had never met her in person, but valued her opinions and contributions very much!

My sincere condolences to her family and friends!

Very sorry indeed Jan 27, 2017

I knew her from the German forum, and remember her funny German. I had clearly the impression she was a lively person and a lovely spirit and I thought she was very young...
My sincere condolences to her family.

Shocked Jan 30, 2017

This is shocking and terribly sad news. I met Helena at my very first Powwow in Frankfurt. She actually suggested that we meet up at the train station and take the walk to the venue together. It was basically her, more than anyone else, who introduced me to the Proz family. My sincere condolences to her family. We will miss her greatly.

This, I think, is the sort of memory that a great many people will have of Helena. She was that kind of person who was able to draw others in, to make them part of the group and to make them feel welcome, at ease and included.

I had a very similar experience at my first ProZ conference in Budapest ten years ago. Helena was the first person I met there at a pre-conference Powwow and I instantly felt part of the group. She was so bubbly and familiar with people that I thought she must have known everyone for ages. But no, that was just the way she was - even with people she only just met.

I was lucky enough to meet her again on one or two more occasions since and she was always so full of life and energy and plans that it is hard to grasp that she had to leave us so early.

My thoughts are with her son and her family. They will be aware of how many people all over the world have been touched by Helena and called her a friend and I hope they can take some solace from the fact that Helena will keep on living in the memories of so many of us throughout the world.
