Source text - English A 45-year old man was referred to the ENT emergency team with sudden onset massive vertigo, nausea and vomiting following a single SCUBA-dive to 35.1 meters with a total dive time of 38 minutes. It was an uneventful coastal sea dive wearing a dry suit (water temperature 16° Celsius) with no reported problems with equalising pressures. He used Nitrox-32 as a bottom gas switched to Nitrox-28 for decompression 14 minutes into the dive, he got some sand in the mouthpiece of his regulator and coughed. He undertook a scheduled decompression stop at 6 meters for 5 minutes. Twenty minutes after surfacing he developed massive vertigo, nausea and vomiting. He reported no tinnitus or hearing loss, no otalgia and reported no other symptoms of decompression sickness as joint pain or paraethesia. He was previously fit and well and had undergone over 200 uneventful dives. On examination he was alert and orientated, Rinne’s test was positive bilaterally and Weber’s test was heard in the midline. He was found to have grade 3 rotational nystagmus. Fistula test was negative. Examination of the peripheral nerves was unremarkable. It was not possible to perform Romberg or Unterberger’s test due to his inability to stand. His vertigo prevented him from holding any position other than lying supine. (...)
Continuing the high-flow 100% oxygen on a blue-light transport he was transferred to a category 1 hyperbaric facility for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where he was treated immediately on a decompression treatment table (US Navy table 6) in a hyperbaric chamber.
Discussion
This case shows a textbook example of an isolated mono-lateral inner ear (vestibular) decompression injury. (...)
Translation - Portuguese Um homem de 45 anos de idade foi apresentado à equipa de urgência de otorrinolaringologia com sintomas, súbitos e intensos, de vertigens, náuseas e vómitos, após um único mergulho com escafandro a 35,1 metros, num tempo total de 38 minutos. Foi um mergulho normal, na orla costeira, usando um fato seco (temperatura da água 16ºC) e sem problemas assinaláveis de compensação. O mergulhador usou Nitrox-32 como mistura de fundo, mudou para Nitrox-28 para descompressão aos 14 minutos de mergulho, tendo tossido ao sentir alguma areia no bocal do regulador. Realizou a paragem de descompressão planeada a 6 metros durante 5 minutos. Após 20 minutos à superfície, desenvolve fortes vertigens, náuseas e vómitos. Ele referiu não ter acúfenos, perda de audição, otalgias, nem outros sintomas de doença descompressiva, tais como dores articulares ou parestesia. Tratava-se de um indivíduo saudável e em boa forma física com mais de 200 mergulhos registados, sem ocorrências. Durante o exame esteve lúcido e alerta. O teste de Rinne deu positivo bilateralmente e o teste de Weber foi sentido na linha média. Apresentava nistagmo rotatório de grau 3. O teste de fístula foi negativo. O exame aos nervos periféricos foi inconclusivo. Não foi possível efetuar o teste de Romberg ou Unterberg devido à sua incapacidade de se manter em pé. As suas vertigens impediam-no de manter qualquer outra posição que não o decúbito dorsal. (…)
Mantendo-o no veículo de emergência com um débito elevado de oxigénio a 100%, foi transferido para uma unidade hiberbárica de categoria 1, por forma a receber terapia com oxigénio hiperbárico. Aí foi imediatamente tratado em câmara hiperbárica seguindo uma tabela de tratamento de descompressão (tabela 6, US Navy).
Discussão
Este caso representa um exemplo clássico de uma lesão descompressiva isolada uni-lateral do ouvido interno (vestibular). (…)

Marine VHF radios are used for standard communication between boats, but you normally need a VHF radio license to operate one.
Normal VHF radios without special housing are not ready to dive with. Only the Nautilus Lifeline™ has a special pressure and water-resistant housing and additionally incorporates a distress button to send your coordinates to other boats. Obviously the counterpart needs a radio too and, as with all radio-frequencies, there is a limitation in distance. Disadvantage for this device: it needs an MMSI number, which in many countries is only given to ships.
Another option is the use of a Satellite phone, but you will need an underwater housing for it. You can practically call anyone in the world with it and satellite technology makes it possible to determine the approximate position of the user.

Somente o Nautilus Lifeline™ dispõe de uma caixa especial, resistente à pressão e à água, incorporando, para além disso, um botão de perigo que envia as suas coordenadas para outras embarcações. Obviamente que a outra parte também deverá possuir um rádio e, tal como em todas as frequências de rádio, existe uma limitação de distância. Outra opção seria o uso de um telefone via satélite, mas este irá também precisar de uma caixa estanque subaquática. Com a tecnologia via satélite é possível telefonar a praticamente qualquer pessoa, em qualquer lugar do mundo, permitindo ainda determinar a posição aproximada do utilizador.

The ECG of a healthy heart shows an unorganised, uniform rhythm called Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR). The persons with NSR will have a pulse. This pulse is produced by the heart’s pumping.
Dysrhytmias are abnormal heart rhythms that can prevent the heart from pumping properly. There are numerous causes of dysrhythmias including:
• Narrowing an hardening of the arteries of the heart (coronary heart disease)
• Chemical imbalances
• Trauma to the heart muscle
• Low Blood oxygen levels (drowning, suffocation)
• Central Nervous System damage
• Drugs and Medications
• Electrocutions
• Hypothermia (low body temperature)
Coronary heart disease is a major cause of cardiac arrest. A heart attack is caused by heart disease too. However, when someone has a heart attack, the heart does not usually stop beating.

Source text - English Sediment hydrocarbon concentrations were generally higher, but comparable to the previously recorded concentrations with concentrations associated with natural fluid seeps and drilling activity around the existing XXX and XXX cluster of wells. Likewise, the higher THC at several stations in the south and east of the ERT ) regional survey may be associated with natural hydrocarbon seeps, as the stations were located adjacent to observed pockmarks and areas of asphalt exposures and at one station close to the existing XXX well possibly associated with the dispersal of drilling mud. Throughout Block XX and Block XX stations, a low level HMW UCM suggested that hydrocarbons in sediment were likely to be composed of well weathered mixed petrogenic and biogenic material; a trend consistent with previous surveys. A preference of odd- over even-numbered n-alkanes and the predominance of pristane over phytane at all Block 31 PSVM and Block 31 EA stations further suggested biogenic hydrocarbons, such as those from terrestrial higher plants. Analyses of PAHs revealed pre-dominantly petrogenic PAHs, suggesting inputs from atmospheric fallout and rivers, as well as anthropogenic activities such as oil and gas exploration. Total PAH concentrations were lower than previously recorded ERL and ERT, although, there was a shift in the proportion of NPD with the current PSVM and EA stations presenting greater proportions of the predominantly petrogenic LMW PAHs; potentially a factor of the general increase in oil and gas related development within the region. Concentrations recorded in Block XXX and Block XX stations were within the range seen across all surveyed blocks. All PAHs for which there was an AET, ERL or ERM had concentrations below their respective thresholds within Block XX and Block XX stations and across all surveyed blocks, and were therefore not expected to have deleterious effects on the environment or biota within the survey area.

I started my professional career as a marine biologist, specialised in fisheries, aquaculture and environment. Meanwhile, I was working as a certified associate teacher in several professional courses on fisheries and aquaculture.
Then, in 1995, I started my own company and worked as scuba diving instructor and communications officer for a really long period. This allowed me to gain experience in creating and translating all text and multimedia contents (workbooks, slideshows, website) from English, Spanish and French into Portuguese. Has a CEO of a dive centre I raise an excellent awareness of tourism, customer services, logistics and human resources along with my training in this area. Meanwhile, I also improved my skills as an Emergency and First Aid provider and trainer together with a vast experience in Paramedic Medicine (Health Care and First Aid).
That’s when I decide to become a translator. So, I finished another second degree in Linguistics (Languages and Communication), with a focus on Portuguese, English and Spanish. After a couple of years, I headed to Luxembourg where I completed a traineeship at Directorate General of Translation (European Parliament).
