Chinese to English: Aerosol jet printing for 3D printing of electronics (气溶胶喷印打印技术) General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Manufacturing
Translation - English Aerosol jet printing is another type of technology for deposition of materials, which uses aerodynamic focussing of aerosolised droplets to precisely deposit materials onto a substrate. Firstly, the functional liquid is atomised into a mist of droplets with a 2–5μm diameter, and the aerosolised droplets are then carried and delivered to the print head by a gas stream. At the same time, a sheath gas focusses the droplets into a 10–100μm diameter jet, which is spray deposited onto the substrate. The actual movement of the nozzle is programmed and controlled via a multi-axial CNC (Computer Numerical Control). As soon as the ink pattern is deposited, it will then go through further post-processing, such as heating, sintering or UV curing. Aerosol jet printing can be used for many types of material, it has a high resolution, fast print speeds and allows the blending of multiple materials during printing. Not only can aerosol jet printing technology be used for direct deposition of metal nanoparticle inks, it can also deposit a seed layer and, together with the use of chemical plating, be used for the manufacture of conductive structures. It is compatible with a wide selection of printing materials, for example, CNT ink, polymers, adhesives, ceramics and bioactive substances, including silicon, polyimide, glass and aluminium oxide.
Chinese to English: Innovation in subframe manufacturing for electric vehicles (新能源汽车铝合金副车架机) General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Translation - English Use of 3D printing + casting technology in trial production of aluminium alloy subframe for electric vehicles
In August 2023, the Huzhou Meimai Technology Company (Meimai Technology) ran a trial production of subframe products for electric vehicles that combined the use of 3D printing with casting technology and specialist aluminium alloy materials. With the electric vehicles industry booming currently, it is hoped that this could bring about a transformation in the research and development and the production of subframes.
According to Meimai Technology, the subframes resulting from the trial production had a high degree of integrated functionality, with multiple connection points that can be used for attaching control arms, pillars and stabilisers, and electric drive systems, while allowing components to be connected securely to the vehicle body. It is worth highlighting that they have been able to meet all the strength, stiffness, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) requirements. This was achieved in the die casting process by integrating hollow profiles into the casting process to create a sealed cavity, combined with topology design optimisation of the upper shell. As a result, the overall design of the subframe no longer needs to incorporate a complex connection process, reducing the requirement to create separate production and assembly processes for a variety of individual components, as well as lowering the manufacturing costs of the product.
The subframes in the trial production were created using a no-mould rapid manufacturing process. Before the trial production, Meimai Technology had used advanced sand mould additive manufacturing technology and specialist RWP casting simulation software to carry out its casting system design, filling and solidification. Once this was completed, the sand mould would then be split and 3D printed, before undergoing box casting. This helped to shorten the construction time and by the end of the process, the subframe parts would be obtained.
As electric vehicle technology continues to develop, battery performance continues to evolve, electric vehicle chassis platforms continue to be upgraded, and we see a trend in which powertrains are gradually shifting towards rear-wheel drive. These changes continue to place new demands on electric vehicles’ subframes and also create challenges for the research and development, production and delivery lead times of subframes. The use of additive manufacturing combined with casting technology removes the constraints associated with traditional casting methods. It is also possible, during the research and development process, to change designs repeatedly and to create samples rapidly. This can help to support the rapid development of electric vehicle businesses and help them to seize opportunities, and to actively support the thriving development of China’s electric vehicle sector.
