Powwow Report by Tom Ellett - November 14, 2012

Attendance at the November powwow was lower than expected, with several regulars having to cancel at the last minute owing to workload. However, those that did make it enjoyed some good conversation and gave the thumbs-up to the new venue for its menu and ambience.

Tom Ellett reported on his recent trip to the ATA annual conference in San Diego. Among the highlights was a presentation by Chris Durban entitled "The Care and Feeding of Direct Clients." One of Durban's key points was that, if you find your clients are accepting every bid without objection, it is time to raise your rates. The right rate is the one that generates some resistance.

In the context of a discussion among powwow attendees about what to charge clients that frequently request the translation of a few words here and there, Tom shared another piece of advice from Chris Durban: By all means give regular, well-paying clients the occasional freebie, but make sure you still include it as a no-cost item on your next bill. This encourages the perception among clients that they are paying a professional fee for the valued overall service you provide, rather than just a piecework rate.
