- L'erosione è quel fenomeno che ha come effetto l'esportazione graduale di suolo o roccia ad opera di agenti quali il vento, l'acqua o il ghiaccio oppure per effetto di movimenti gravitativi o, infine, per digestione da parte di organismi viventi (bioerosione). L'erosione è contemporanea o successiva all'alterazione generata da processi chimici o fisici. L'erosione può avere effetti negativi sulle attività antropiche, in particolare sull'agricoltura perché può sottrarre terreno utile alle coltivazioni ma non solo: la torbidità delle acque cariche di sedimenti possono alterare alcuni ecosistemi.

continuo rimodellamento della superficie terrestre che
determina la rimozione di materiale dalla superficie dei
suoli. In ecosistemi non alterati dall’uomo l’erosione è un
fenomeno naturale che le attività dell’uomo accelerano
fino a provocare un degrado progressivo della fertilità e
quindi della produttività potenziale dei suoli.
L’erosione è un processo complesso influenzato da
numerosi fattori quali il clima, il tipo di suoli, le forme del
paesaggio, l’idrologia, la vegetazione e le colture, nonché
i sistemi di lavorazione e di coltivazione. Tali fattori sono
tra loro correlati ed in grado di determinare, in differente
misura, l’entità del processo erosivo e le sue variazioni
nello spazio e nel tempo.
