- δήμος (deme) όρος που χρησιμοποιούν οι συστηματικοί για να περιγράψουν έναν τοπικό πληθυσμό από ελευθέρως διασταυρούμενα άτομα. Οι γενετιστές χρησιμοποιούν τον ταυτόσημο όρο "πληθυσμός". Συνήθως ένας δήμος καταλαμβάνει γεωγραφικά περιορισμένο χώρο· είναι όμως δυνατόν να εξαπλούται σε μια ολόκληρη ήπειρο ή ημισφαίριο της Γης. Πολλοί αλληλοδιασταυρούμενοι δήμοι συγκροτούν ένα είδος. Ένα είδος του οποίου οι δήμοι διαφέρουν μόνο κατά τη γεωγραφική θέση ονομάζεται μονοτυπικό. Αν υπάρχουν και άλλες διαφορές μεταξύ των δήμων, π.χ. μορφολογικές, βιοχημικές, ηθολογικές, χρωμοσωμικές, τότε το είδος ονομάζεται πολυτυπικό και οι διαφορετικοί δήμοι ισοδυναμούν προς υπο-είδη.
