            • Pošto je smisao obaveštenja pacijenta da otkloni pacijentovo neznanje medicinskih činjenica koje se tiču njegovog vlastitog stanja zdravlja i potrebe za odgovarajućim lečenjem, obaveštenje prethodi pristanku na lečenje i ispunjava sadržinu pristanka. Pristanak se ne proteže izvan postojećeg znanja pacijenta, odnosno činjenica saopštenih od strane lekara. Temelj odluke o pristanku čini uvek to obaveštenje. Zato angloamerički pravnici koriste termin „pristanka obaveštenog pacijenta“, odnosno „informed consent“, u kontekstu problematike koja se tiče pacijentovog pristanka na lečenje.
