- Permafrostboden – auch Dauerfrostboden – ist ab einer gewissen Tiefe das ganze Jahr hindurch gefroren. Definitionsgemäß ist Permafrostboden „Boden, Sediment oder Gestein, welches in unterschiedlicher Mächtigkeit und Tiefe unter der Erdoberfläche mindestens 2 Jahre ununterbrochen Temperaturen unter dem Gefrierpunkt aufweist“.[1] Wikipedia - by Ulrike MacKay

- Permafrostgebiete werden untergliedert in Zonen kontinuierlichen und diskontinuierlichen
Permafrostes. Bei kontinuierlichem Permafrost ist mehr als 90% des Gebietes von Permafrost
unterlagert. Er kann bis mehrere 100 m in die Tiefe reichen, so z.B. in Teilen Sibiriens. In diskontinuierlichem
Permafrost sind 10 bis 90 % des Gebietes unterlagert. Der Permafrost reicht
hier stellenweise nur wenige Meter in die Tiefe. In mancher Literatur ist der diskontinuierliche
Permafrost nochmals untergliedert in „sporadischen“ Permafrost, bei dem etwa 5 bis 35 % des
Gebiets von Permafrost unterlagert sind.
Eine Sonderform stellt der so genannte submarine Permafrost im Schelfbereich des Arktischen
Ozeans dar. Er ist ein Überbleibsel der letzten Eiszeit, entstand als der Schelf trocken

- Durch die globale Klimaerwärmung werden nach Ansicht von Göttinger Wissenschaftlern im Norden Sibiriens weitaus mehr Treibhausgase freigesetzt als bislang prognostiziert. Mit dem für dieses Jahrhundert erwarteten Temperaturanstieg um sechs bis sieben Grad veränderten sich die Auftautiefen der Permafrostböden, sagte der Bodenkundler Heiner Flessa. Dadurch würden große Mengen Kohlenstoff freigesetzt.
