- Permafrostboden – auch Dauerfrostboden – ist ab einer gewissen Tiefe das ganze Jahr hindurch gefroren. - Permafrostgebiete werden untergliedert in Zonen kontinuierlichen und diskontinuierlichen
Permafrostes. Bei kontinuierlichem Permafrost ist mehr als 90% des Gebietes von Permafrost
unterlagert. Er kann bis mehrere 100 m in die Tiefe reichen, so z.B. in Teilen Sibiriens. In diskontinuierlichem
Permafrost sind 10 bis 90 % des Gebietes unterlagert. Der Permafrost reicht

Ozeans dar. Er ist ein Überbleibsel der letzten Eiszeit, entstand als der Schelf trocken

- Durch die globale Klimaerwärmung werden nach Ansicht von Göttinger Wissenschaftlern im Norden Sibiriens weitaus mehr Treibhausgase freigesetzt als bislang prognostiziert.
