            • Ein Ökoton (auch Saumbiotop oder Randbiotop) ist in der Ökologie ein Übergangsbereich zwischen zwei verschiedenen Ökosystemen. Oft sind diese besonders artenreich. So bieten z.B. Ökotone zwischen Wald und Offenland, sprich Säume, eine große Anzahl an ökologischen Nischen. Ein typisches Beispiel ist der Mangrovenwald, welcher einen Übergang zwischen Land- und Wasserökosystem darstellt. Andere Beispiele sind Waldränder, Hecken und Gewässerufer.
