L’abilità numerica fa parte di una competenza più ampia, attualmente definita con l’espressione «pensare matematico» (Schoenfeld, 1992). - La Prova di abilità numerica (di Zamperlin e Cacciò) fa riferimento alla definizione di tale abilità proposta da Thurstone e
Thurstone tl962; 1982]: «si tratta di un'attitudine, di una facilità a lavorare con i numeri, a risolvere rapidamente e con esattezza
semplici problemi quantitativi, a capire e riconoscere le differenze numeriche». E stata quindi costruita ispirandosi al subtest di
abilità numerica del test PMA (1963) e si articola in:
- completamento di serie numeriche;
- soluzione di problemi;
