Proust a tratat timpul ca fiind atât un element distrugător, cât şi un element pozitiv, a cărui esenţă poate fi descoperită numai de memoria intuitivă. Scurgerea timpului este explicată în lumina teoriilor filosofului francez Henri Bergson, pe care Proust îl admira şi care se înrudea. Reîntoarcerile în timp erau produse de contactul cu o madlenă, un obiect care declanşa un flashback instantaneu.
