            • Терминът ИИ е измислен от Джон Макарти през 1956, когато той говори за "интелигентност, която теоретично може да бъде описана толкова добре, че една машина да може да я симулира". Днес той определя ИИ като "науката за създаване на интелигентни машини, и по-специално интелигентни компютърни програми." И макар че обикновено ИИ се свързва компютърните науки, в действителност в изследователския процес участват и психолози, биолози, философи, математици, лингвисти и др. Самата наука е от два типа - в по-крайната си, т.нар. "силна", версия, целта е да се създадат компютри, разумни поне колкото нас, и представяни във филми като "Blade Runner" и "AI". В "по-леката" си версия, науката за изкуствения интелект просто заявява, че някои характеристики, наподобяващи мислене могат да се прибавят към компютрите, за да станат те по-полезни; че машините могат да бъдат научени да симулират човешките познавателни способности, тоест да функционират като че ли са интелигентни. Някои от тези цели вече се осъществяват, например при разработката на софтуер за разпознаване на речта. AI има няколко основни клона : 1. невронни мрежи (neural networks) - това са системи, които се опитват да симулират интелигентност като възпроизвеждат различните физически връзки, осъществявани в мозъците на животните 2. обработка на естествени езици (Natural Language Processing) - това включва програмиране на компютрите да разбират естествените човешки езици. 3. роботика (robotics) - роботиката се опитва да създаде интелигентни роботи, които, например, да могат да виждат, чуват и реагират на външни сетивни стимули 4. игри (game playing) - това включва програмиране на компютрите да могат да играят игри като шах 5. експертни системи (expert systems) - целта е компютрите да се програмират да вземат решения в реални ситуации изкуствен интелект - by 4leavedClover
