            • Cột thu lôi là một dụng cụ rất quan trọng của một hệ thống chống sét, do ba bộ phận cấu thành là kim thu sét trực tiếp, dây dẫn thoát sét và thiết bị tiếp đất. Mỗi bộ phận đều có điện trở rất nhỏ, mặt cắt phải đạt tới mức độ nhất định để chịu được dòng điện cực lớn khi sét đánh qua. Kim thu sét sẽ "hút" sét truyền vào dây dẫn sét và tản nhanh dòng sét xuống thiết bị tiếp địa chôn sâu trong đất. Quy trình hoạt động của hệ thống chống sét là một quy trình khép kín nên hệ thống tiếp đất phải tiếp xúc tốt với mặt đất để có thể dẫn dòng điện xuống đất một cách nhanh nhất khi bị sét đánh. Tuy nhiên, mục đích của cột thu lôi thường bị hiểu lầm. Nhiều người cho rằng chúng dùng để “thu hút” sét.
