- La SARS (acronimo di Severe acute respiratory syndrome in inglese) o sindrome respiratoria acuta grave (o "severa"),[1] fu una forma atipica di polmonite causata dal virus SARS-CoV, apparsa per la prima volta nel novembre 2002 nella provincia del Guangdong (Canton) in Cina.
La malattia, identificata per la prima volta dal medico italiano Carlo Urbani (poi deceduto a causa della stessa), produsse un'epidemia lungo un arco temporale che andò dal novembre 2002 al luglio 2003, determinando 8096 casi e 774 decessi in 17 paesi (per la maggior parte nella Cina continentale e ad Hong Kong), per un tasso di letalità finale del 9,6%. Dal 2004 (fino al 2019) non si sono più segnalati altri casi di SARS in alcuna parte del mondo. Questa malattia fu causata da un coronavirus (così chiamato per la sua apparenza al microscopio) che sul finire del 2017 gli scienziati cinesi hanno rintracciato nei pipistrelli comunemente noti come ferri di cavallo, con gli zibetti quali vettori intermediari[2]. - Conosciuta anche come sindrome acuta respiratoria grave, la SARS è una malattia di natura virale contagiosa e potenzialmente mortale. Colpisce prevalentemente l'apparato respiratorio, provocando sintomi molto simili a quelli dell'influenza e, nei casi più sfortunati, una polmonite atipica capace di provocare grave insufficienza respiratoria.
La prima (e unica, al momento) epidemia di SARS si verificò tra il 2002 e il 2003, in Cina. Da lì, il virus ebbe una rapida diffusione in molti altri paesi asiatici e non solo. La scoperta della SARS si deve a un medico italiano, Carlo Urbani, che fu una delle 774 vittime dell'infezione epidemica.

- Teški akutni respiratorni sindrom ili SARS (engl. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) je zarazna bolest koja se prvi put promatrala u novembru 2002. godine u kineskoj pokrajini Guangdong,[1] a postala šire aktuelna od početka februara 2003. godine zbog većeg broja obolelih u Hong Kongu, Singapuru, Vijetnamu, Tajvanu i Bangkoku, od kojih su polovina bili zdravstveni radnici koji su brinuli o obolelima.
