- Dit is een epidemiologisch fenomeen, waarbij de weerstand van een populatie tegen de verspreiding van een infectieus agens gebaseerd is op de weerstand van een deel van de populatie. Dit betekent onder andere dat in een bepaalde populatie de personen die niet gevaccineerd zijn, ook beschermd zijn tegen een pathogeen door de immuniteit van de gevaccineerde personen in die populatie.
