- Virus förökar sig på två olika sätt. Det ena sättet, ett så kallat lytiskt infektionsförlopp, innebär att viruspartiklarna kidnappar värdcellens maskineri, tillverkar hundratals nya kopior av sig själv, tar död på cellen och därefter sprider sina viruskopior vidare ut i organismen.
Det andra sättet, ett latent infektionsförlopp, innebär att viruspartiklar infekterar värdcellen med sitt DNA och därefter sitter viralt DNA kvar i cellerna i ett ”vilande” läge.
