- Az elfogultság lehet vélt vagy valós jellegű, vonatkozhat személyekre (az újságíróra, a szerkesztőre, a producerre, a tulajdonosra), vagy az egész médiacsatornára (a tévéadóra, az újságra, a rádióállomásra).
Az elfogultság okai nem mindig politikai természetűek.
Az elfogultság lehet akár látszólagos is, amikor a jelenség mögött nem az igazságtalanság, hanem a fogalmak eltérő használata bújik meg. Ezzel szemben az elfogultság intézményesített formája az állami cenzúra, noha a demokráciában a magán és a közérdek bonyolult összefonódásai a cenzúrához hasonlóan a média elfogultságához vezethetnek el. Az elfogultságnak lehetnek továbbá etnikai, faji, nyelvi, regionális, gazdasági és vállalati, társadalmi és osztálybéli, vallási, interkulturális értelmezésbeli okai is.
