Nell'ambito dell'economia finanziaria i due termini sono utilizzati come sinonimi, e designano il rapporto di indebitamento di un'impresa:

Nella ragioneria e nella finanza aziendale, il termine leva finanziaria è utilizzato con riferimento a un dato investimento o attività, e denota il rapporto tra indebitamento finanziario netto e patrimonio netto di un'impresa.

נמחיש את עקרון המינוף באמצעות דוגמא מספרית:
בידי יוסי 1,000$.
נניח כי שער הדולר מול השקל עומד על 4.2.
כמו כן, נניח כי יחס המינוף בהשקעה של יוסי עומד על 1:100. קרי, על כל דולר שהוא משקיע הוא מקבל הלוואה של 99$, איתם הוא יכול לסחור. במילים אחרות יוסי השקיע בפועל רק 1% אחד מהסכום.
אם הדולר יגיע לשער של 4.35 במועד פירעון ההלוואה הוא ימכור 100,000$ והרווח שלו יוכל להגיע עד ל- 15,000 ₪ (100,000 x 0.15 ₪) שמהווה שיעור רווח של כ- 240%.
