- u subarktičkim područjima ljeto traje svega dva do tri mjeseca, i premda se Sunce uopće ne spušta ispod horizonta, temperature su preniske da bi se vječno smrznuta zemlja otopila dublje od jednog metra. To neprekidno smrznuto tlo, poznato pod nazivom permafrost, u potpunosti je vodonepropusno. Kad se snijeg otopi, voda ne može oteći kroz tlo, pa tako nastaju brojna jezera i močvare.
