Als Ursache für dieses Phänomen gelten z.B. die staatliche (häufig inflationsfördernde) Konjunkturpolitik, die Existenz von Monopolen und Oligopolen, die auf Nachfragerückgang mit Preiserhöhung reagieren, und die gewerkschaftliche Durchsetzung von Lohnerhöhungen trotz eingeschränkter Arbeitskräftenachfrage.
