ProZ.com Professionals Called Upon to Subtitle Films Honoring Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, in up to 100 Languages
ProZ.com's new sourcing platform used to locate and manage translators in record time
SYRACUSE, NY, December 6, 2006 — ProZ.com, the world’s leading enabling and sourcing portal for language professionals, today announced that its new online sourcing and vendor management platform -- in conjunction with its vast network of 160,000 linguists -- had been used in a landmark 100-language subtitling project honoring Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Ashoka, the global organization celebrating 25 years of supporting social entrepreneurship, spearheaded the project with contributing partners VISA, dotSUB, ProZ.com, Translators Without Borders and Eurotexte.
Dr. Yunus shares his story in three films produced by Ashoka, which detail his unique approach to eradicating poverty and next steps for a global microfinance revolution. To honor Dr. Yunus as one of the world’s greatest social entrepreneurs, Ashoka and its contributing partners, using dotSUB’s browser based subtitling tool, embarked on a translation project of impressive scale and magnitude to ensure that millions of people, regardless of what language they speak, have access to understanding the remarkable work of this year’s Nobel Prize winner. These films are available for viewing at http://www.ashoka.org/100translations
“Dr. Yunus’ brilliant microcredit strategy is based on unleashing the potential of every person to change his or her life,” said Susan Davis, Director of Ashoka’s Global Academy. “We are thankful to ProZ.com for enabling us to rapidly find and manage many of the linguists needed for this worthwhile endeavor, especially those with very specialized language skills who translated the films for those in countries where Dr. Yunus’ message may have its greatest impact.”
“Without ProZ.com’s new sourcing application, and their dedicated and highly professional global network of translators, this project would not have been possible,” stated Michael Smolens, dotSUB CEO.
“We are honored to be included in this meaningful undertaking and to be able to offer this wonderful opportunity to ProZ.com members as all participating translators will be officially recognized in the films’ credits,” commented Mike Kidd, ProZ.com’s executive vice president. “Helping Ashoka honor Dr. Yunus with this project fits with our mission to provide solutions and opportunities to enable anyone to connect with the world’s language professionals.”
ProZ.com members along with participants from Translators Without Borders, which provides translation to humanitarian organizations and Eurotexte, a language service provider based in France, completed their translations easily online using dotSUB’s innovative subtitling technology, which enables people from around the world to translate film or video into any language from a browser with no software downloads.
ProZ.com’s new online sourcing and vendor management applications that were used by Ashoka and dotSUB are available at this time only to charter customers. Companies may apply to become charter customers a http://www.proz.com/employers
