English term

bypass capacitor

GBK English to German Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
Definition from seattlerobotics.org:
A capacitor employed to conduct an alternating current around a component or group of components. Often the AC is removed from an AC/DC mixture, the DC being free to pass through the bypassed component.
Example sentences:
Digital devices are not the only chips that require bypass capacitors. Analog circuits also benefit from including bypass capacitors but in another way. Although bypass capacitors in digital systems control fast rising- and falling-time glitches from the device, bypass capacitors in analog systems help reduce power-supply noise at the analog device. (Reed Business Information)
The first line of defense against unwanted perturbations on the power supply is the bypass capacitor. A bypass capacitor eliminates voltage droops on the power supply by storing electric charge to be released when a voltage spike occurs. It also provides this service at a wide range of frequencies by creating a low-impedance path to ground for the power supply. (Intersil Americas Inc.)
So when we put several of these bypass capacitors (each with different L and C values) in parallel, the negative and positive pieces of imaginary part of the admittance will cancel at certain frequencies. (TechInsights)

Discussion

Christian Schneider Jul 23, 2009:
Also ich als studierter E-Techniker würde zu Bypass-Kondensator, alternativ zu Entkopplungskondensator tendieren.
Ableitkondensator mag zwar auch korrekt sein, hab ich aber so gut wie nie gehört.
mustafaer Jul 18, 2009:
remains open; please suggest a word Decoupling capacitor
A decoupling capacitor is a capacitor used to decouple one part of an electrical network (circuit) from another. Noise caused by other circuit elements is shunted through the capacitor reducing the effect they have on the rest of the circuit.
An alternative name is BYPASS capacitor as it is used to bypass the power supply or other high impedance component of a circuit

Bypass-/Überbrückungskondensator Im Wörterbuch der Elektronik, Datentechnik, Telekommunikation und Medien steht Bypasskondensator als anderer Begriff für Überbrückungskondensator.
litti Jul 11, 2009:
Ueberbrueckungskondensator This is the term my technical colleagues at SONY (Consumer and Broadcast Electronics) always used. I think this is the right term for audio and video contexts. Maybe in other applications another term has to be used.

Walter's proposals # 1 and 2 are both supported by Kucera. Why the term is asked again when already in KOG I fail to see.
Yarramalong Jul 8, 2009:
Bypass capacitor I am an electrical engineer. I have never seen this word before without any other text around it. The international vocabulary IEC 60050 does not contain this term (all about capacitors in electrotechnical vocabulary) http://dom2.iec.ch/iev/iev.nsf/welcome?OpenForm&Seq=1.

In Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoupling_capacitor) it is stated that this is another word for "decoupling capacitor". Thus, "Ableitkondensator" might be correct.

At "http://www.qsl.net/dl7avf/roehren/symbole.html" you can read: "Plate Load or Filter Capacitor - Bypass Capacitor" = Anodenlade- oder Filterkondensator - Abblockkondensator"

At "http://www.patent-de.com/19980813/EP0622888.html" you can read various occurrences for "Filterkondensator" including one representing "bypass capacitor"

It might be possible that the words "bypass capacitor" do not represent a single term. The use in literature seems ambiguous.

Ableitkondensator
Steffen Walter Jul 8, 2009:
Three possible translations According to my research, there are three possible translations:<br>Ableitkondensator, Überbrückungskondensator, Parallelkondensator.<br>If all three are really appropriate (I'm not an electrical engineering expert so am unable to tell), they should all be entered in the glossary, rather than just one term.

Bypass-Kondensator

Auf elektroniknet.de lassen sich die verschiedenen Übersetzungsvarianten als Suchbegriffe eingeben. Das führt zu den folgenden Übersetzungen bzw. Verweisen:

Ausgleichskondensator - siehe Entkopplungskondensator (balanced capacitor)

Nebenschlusskondensator, Überbrückungskondensator, Ableitkondensator, Ableitungskondensator - siehe Bypass-Kondensator (bypass capacitor)
Definition from elektroniknet.de:
(bypass capacitor) Auch: Ableitungskondensator, Kurzschlusskondensator, Überbrückungskondensator. Allgemein ein Kondensator, der für bestimmte Signale oder Störsignale eine Umgeheungs oder Ableitungsstrecke schaffen soll. Ein Beispiel ist der Rausch-Bypass-Kondensator.
Example sentences:
Während die Bypass-Kondensatoren in digitalen Systemen dafür sorgen, die von den kurzen Anstiegs- und Abfallzeiten der Bauteile verursachten Glitches in den Griff zu bekommen, dienen sie in analogen Systemen zum Fernhalten von Störungen aus der Stromversorgung. (elektroniknet.de)
