Because the IP Internet is a connectionless system, gateways and hosts route datagrams without coordinating with the original sender. ولكن كلمة معبر ربما تكون أكثر دقة حينما نتحدث عن نماذج الأمثلة الواردة وبخاصة في عمله مع أجهزة أخرى لتوفيق المعلومات بحيث تسمح بمرورها إلى الجهاز المطلوب.
يتم إطلاق لقب Gateway عليها وهي تعني المعبر - وتقوم بإيصالك بشكبات اكبر منها مثل الانترنت (البوصلة التقنية)
