הסכמה מדעת היא זכותו של המטופל לקבל החלטות, בצורה חופשית, באשר לטיפול הרפואי שיקבל, זאת לאחר שקיבל מידע רפואי רלוונטי לצורך קבלת החלטות אלה. אפשר שהחלטת המטופל תהיה להסכים, או לסרב, לקבלת הטיפול הרפואי. הסכמה מדעת מטילה גם חובה מקבילה על המטפל שלא להתחיל בטיפול בטרם קיבל את הסכמת המטופל, זאת לאחר שנתן למטופל מידע רלוונטי באשר לטיפול וכן הזדמנות להבין את המידע הרפואי ולהביע את רצונו באשר לקבלת הטיפול.
