사각형 배너 광고(rectangle ad)는 단순히 배너 광고나 버튼 광고의 생김새, 즉 모양을 그대로 설명한 용어에 지나지 않는다. 사실상 현재까지 사각형 모양의 광고 외에 다른 모양의 광고 형태가 없었다. 배너 광고의 표준 규격을 정할 당시의 내역을 보면, 풀 배너(full banner)로 468x60 IMU, 하프 배너 (half banner)로 234x60 IMU, 버티컬 배너(vertical banner)로 120x240 IMU 등이 있는 데, 여기서 말하는 사각형 배너 광고는 이들 규격보다 큰 배너 광고가 등장함에 따라 새롭게 추가된 표준 규격의 배너 광고이다. 광고주나 매체사는 배너 광고의 효과성을 높이기 위한 방안을 배너 크기에서 찾게 되었다. 따라서 평준화된 기존의 배너 광고에서 사용자 들에게 조금 더 눈에 띄고자 기존 배너 광고보다 큰 광고가 등장하기 시작하였다. 이러한 추세에 따라 IAB 도 ‘rectangle ad’라고 하여 기존 배너 광고와 분리하여 규격을 정하게 되었다. 새로 정한 사각형 배너 광고(rectangle ad)의 표준 규격을 보면 다음과 같다: 기본 사이즈(rectangle) : 180 x 150 IMU 중간 사이즈(Medium Rectangle) : 300 x 250 IMU 큰 사이즈(Large Rectangle) : 336 x 280 IMU 버티컬 배너 광고(Vertical Rectangle) : 240 x 400 IMU 정사각형 팝업 광고(Square Pop-up) : 250 x 250 IMU (위와 같음)
