환경운동이 되살린 생태관광의 낙원 호주 ‘프레이저 섬’, 벌거숭이 섬이 새의 천국 탈바꿈 . . . 호주를 비롯해 전세계에서 모인 관광객들은 다들 『이렇게 많은 새를 한꺼번에 구경하기 는 처음』이라며 『새 지저귀는 소리 때문에 밤잠을 설쳤지만 마치 새둥지 안에 들어와 있는 듯 기분이 너무 좋다』는 반응들이다. 흔히 관광하면 역사나 문화유적을 돌아보는 것을 생각하지만 프레이저 섬의 새 관광은 자연환경 그 자체를 상품화시켜 보여주는 이 른바 생태관광이다. 폭 15km, 길이 약 120km에 달하는 프레이저 섬은 탄성을 자아 내는 자연환경과 천연 생태계의 보고. 일명 모래섬이라 불릴 정도로 미세한 모래가 넓게 펼쳐진 백사장은 차로 2시간을 달려야 다 돌 아볼 수 있는 명물이다. 하얀색 빨간색 자주 색 오랜지색 갈색 등 총천연색의 해안절벽은 바람과 바닷물이 빚어놓은 기기묘묘한 형태 로 탄성을 자아낸다. 모래섬이면서도 섬 안쪽에 들어선 열대우림 역시 장관이다. 이끼류와 양치류, 지름이 4m 에 이르고 높이가 50m 이상에 수령 2000년 이 넘는 거대한 나무들이 햇빛을 가려 흡사 처녀지를 걷는 듯한 착각을 불러온다. . . .
