Spanish term

estados de cuestión de un tema

Spanish to English Social Sciences History Historiography
It's a type of academic paper - maybe particularly Spanish - and from my research it sounds very like what we call a literature review. I was wondering if there are any other terms for it?

"Los demás géneros –papers, estados de cuestión , manuales universitarios, ensayos teóricos, documentales, wikipedia–son igualmente nobles y necesarios, porque cada uno cumple su propia función."

literature review

Combining the evidence provided by Juan Arturo Blackmore (whose back-to-back Spanish and English resources in the lists with grey background on the first page use these terms) and the comments of Alex Ossa, Phil Goddard, and Yvonne Gallagher. Merely standing on the shoulders of giants to facilitate a better Proz.com entry ;)

a theme state of art

“State of the art (sometimes cutting edge) refers to the highest level of general development, as of a device, technique, or scientific field achieved at a particular time. It also refers to such a level of development reached at any particular time as a result of the common methodologies employed at the time.”
Peer comment(s):

disagree Yvonne Gallagher : Nothing to do with state of art

neutral Alex Ossa : I disagree w/Yvonne: 'estado de (la) cuestion' does indeed mean 'state of the art' as in what's the most up-to-date situation. However it's not a good fit in academic writing. 'Literature review' as suggested by David himself is a significantly better fit

state of the question

I know it sounds literal but I believe it's what it means.

Thank you, Toni. Be well!
agree philgoddard : Although I prefer David's suggestion of "literature review", which is far more common.

Thanks, Phil.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : I thik this is too literal (personally never seen it) and it should be 'literature review' as David suggested

I agree and stated so in my comments. I had never heard it before either but asked a friend who teaches English Lit at Loyola and he confirmed the term is of common use. Saludos, Yvonne!
