English term

accordion scales of time and spac

English Art/Literary Other passage from a book
Dear colleagues,
I’m not sure about the meaning of “accordion scales of time and space” in the passage below, taken from a book by Maria Popova and Ping Zhou, The snail with the right heart... Is it perhaps an idiomatic expression?
Thank you so much for your help!

Emerging from this singular life is a lyrical universal invitation not to mistake difference for defect and to welcome, across the *** accordion scales of time and space, *** diversity as the wellspring of the universe’s beauty and resilience

Dear colleagues, after re-reading Yvonne's suggestion of "range of scales" , I think I've found an Italian word which conveys a similar image of an accordion: it is "ventaglio" , literally "fan"! un ventaglio (range) di scale...
A huge Thank you again!!

Phil and Yvonne, I'm sorry actually this passage is quoted in another book, and the reference is Popova, Zhou, The snail with the right hand ("back-flap copy")... Maybe a review on the back cover?
Yvonne Gallagher Mar 15, 2023:
With Phil Definitely not language for a 5-9 year old child! And pretty convoluted language even as a blurb or review
philgoddard Mar 15, 2023:
This is not a passage from the book It's a review or blurb, I'm not sure which. If I was a child aged 5 to 9, which is who the book is for, it would put me off.

Expanding and contracting scales...

Not an idiomatic expession I have ever seen but I think this is the meaning

An accordeon, the musical instrument, expands and contracts as it is played so I think this is implied here

A RANGE of scales perhaps of time and space
