English term
A region is bigger than a place or a location.
English to French
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
Geography
This is a geography manual for kids aged 8-9.
The whole paragraph reads:
"Location
Location means a place on Earth's surface A location can be defined in more than one way.
One way is by street name and number.
Place
Every place has physical and human features that describe it .
Region
A region is bigger than a place or a location."
It looks simple, doesn't it? Well, I am cracking my skulls.
Likewise, there are words like "landform" or, more simply "land" ins various contexts: economic, historical and of course, geographical.
Thanks for your help.

le terme région décrit une zone plus grande qu'un endroit ou un emplacement
I'm not really happy with 'emplacement', but in essence it could require several words in FR to satisfactorily cover the notion in EN; however, I think being slavishly precise would tend to cloud the real undelrying issue here.

: Perhaps 'lieu' for location (same Latin root). Though let's face it, the English 'distinction' is hardly clear and will flummox adults and children alike - unless the 'or' is not exclusive and simply means 'or in other words'

: I think that "place" here means some kind of "agglomération / town" while "un endroit" would refer to some fairly small area.

Thanks, Daryo! That wouldn't be the way we'd normally use 'place' in EN, at least certainly not for young kids.

: Un emplacement est un endroit//https://www.synonymo.fr/synonyme/emplacement
Le terme désigne et non décrit.

Not necessarily! We might choose 'un endroit sympa' for our picnic, but the 'emplacement' of a nearby factory could spoil it for us. The differentiation in EN between 'place' and 'location' is equally problematic

It's not always about the source to match word by word!! It is for kids aged 8-9 for them to understand and remember the definition!!

: "word for word" or not, this is NOT what the ST says, however much you may season it with some generous helping of "poetic licence" // "A is bigger than B or C" can never "translate as" A is between anything - basic logic?

Une région est plus vaste qu'un lieu ou une localisation.
vaste, ou étendue
lieu, pour "place" (par ex. on dit "lieu de naissance", pour ville)
localisation = location

Regions, however, vary considerably in size. They are generally larger than one place, such as a town or city, and may include several towns or multiple states or provinces. There are three types of regions: formal, functional, and vernacular.

Discussion
1) Le terme [ajouté] région 'désigne' et non 'décrit'.
2) Un endroit sympa mais son emplacement près d'une usine et non pas 'l'emplacement d'une usine à proximité'...
Bref, selon moi cet enfant va se poser des questions. Vous admettez vous-même que vous doutez...
