The topic is a software that helps building software. There is a user group that meets up regularly and the interviewee tells the interviewer what happens at their regular conferences.
Q: Do you have one [conference] coming up soon?
A: Yes. We're meeting in Las Vegas on May 6-9 for four days. The first day, Sunday, is always a **shoot out** where people bring their applications and the audience gets to compare them. This year our theme is developing applications in XXX-edition.
Ich meine, das wäre etwas zwischen "gegenseitigem Beschnuppern" und "Wettbewerb", aber mir fällt nichts sinnvolles ein. Hat jemand eine tolle Idee?

Als Alternative, falls Dir 'Duell' zu hart ist. Kommt mir etwas lockerer vor als Duell, obwohl es ja ursprünglich aus dem Boxbereich kommt.

ich musste sofort an einen Western denken.... Ein Duell zwischen Hersteller und Publikum, vielleicht passt es zum weiteren Stil des Textes

| Duell ist recht passend, obwohl sich der weitere Text nicht der Westernsprache bedient. Der Text geht weiter: "Also on the first day, we get a big room where people can drink beer and have their laptops open and talk together and share code." Also echte Computer-geeks. ;-) |

Eine etwas neutralere Alternative...
Nicht ganz so neutral: Ausscheidungskampf.
Erklärung: Die bisherigen Vorschlägen beschreiben eher den Vorgang selbst als den finalen Zweck. Beim englischen Begriff schwingt halt immer mit, dass es zum Schluss "nur einen geben kann".
