खड़े किनारों की भूलभुलैया से बनी भू-आकृति जिन्हें पार कर पाना कठिन होता है तथा जिसमें कृषि के लिए बहुत अधिक तीव्र ढाल वाले भाग होते हैं। इन क्षेत्रों के अधःस्तर में प्रायः मृतिका और शैल के स्तर पाए जाते हैं जो धरातलीय नदियों और नालों द्वारा अत्यधिक विदरित होती हैं। ऊबड़-खाबड़ या उत्खात भूमि का शैल अभेद्यता, विरल वनस्पति आवरण और अल्पकालीन किंतु भारी वर्षा से जल बहाव के संयुक्त कारणों से विकास होता है।
