The purpose of this procedure is to assure compliance with safe sampling practices for the sampling and handling of petroleum, petroleum products and liquid chemicals normally associated with the petroleum industry

There are certain universal precautions that are common to all types of sampling.

Keep to designated walkways, stairways and passages:
• Keep to designated walkways and stairways.
• Do not run up or down stairways.
• Ground your body by frequently touching the steel stair rail or other integral metal parts of the tank. You must use bare hands when grounding your body; most gloves act as insulators.
• Do not walk beyond the immediate vicinity of the gauge hatch or the railed edge of the tank.
• Exercise care when opening any gauge hatch.
