Cortex screws are fully threaded. They are non self tapping so a tap is required to cut their thread before insertion. Since the holding power of a screw diminishes as the diameter of the screw approaches 40% of the diameter of the bone there are a number of different sizes of cortex screws available in the ***AO armamentarium *** to enable fixation of bones of different diameters
