Barijerno ostrvo je dugačko, usko peščano ostrvo nastalo delovanjem talasa. Čini prošireni morski obalni sprud, koji se primetno - i do 6 metara - uzdiže iznad nivoa mora odnosno visoke plime. Dužina barijernog ostrva je od 10 do 100 kilometara, a širina 2 do 5 kilometara. Paralelno je sa obalom, od koga je odvojeno lagunom ili zalivom. Ima zone s vegetacijom, kao i močvarna područja koja se protežu od obalnog spruda prema laguni.
