English term

go cold turkey

English to Slovak Medical Nutrition diet book
metafora vo vete:

Alcoholic drinks, though pleasant, merely provide empty calories. One glass of white wine contains about 120 calo- ries, while a 12-ounce can of beer racks up 153. Unless you really can’t say no, abstain absolutely on a fast day—it’s a golden opportunity to slash your weekly consumption with- out feeling deprived. Think of it as going cold turkey for two achievable days each week.

I do stand corrected no need for so much passion :)

PS> teraz mi este napada riesenie: byt/ostat "cisty" dva dni v tyzdni.

@Rad Graban thanks

Rad Graban (X) Jun 10, 2013:
@Skopko Indeed. It's up to the asker to decide. I'm not going to change my 'Agree' peer comment because I really know the term 'absťák' mostly from being used in the situations I mentioned earlier. My discussion entry was meant to explain to Nathaniel that it could mean either; especially if he ever comes across a source text by author from Eastern Slovakia and influenced by some local dialects/usage.
Dušan Ján Hlísta (X) Jun 10, 2013:
it is up to the translator to make her decision. However - two independent dictionaries seem to me quiet enough qualified for it.
Rad Graban (X) Jun 10, 2013:
@Nathaniel2 Technically speaking, you are right. However, it is often used (at least where I'm from) in statements such as "Tento víkend nikde nejdem. Mám/dávam si absťáka." Or "Po Silvestri si dávam aspoň týždeň absťáka." That said, it's probably not the best term to use in this context or material (diet book), but it's not 'very' wrong.
Nathaniel2 Jun 10, 2013:
interesting 'your' right.
Dušan Ján Hlísta (X) Jun 10, 2013:
your right - but it is taken from an official paper dictionary and I am in very doubt that you are better than Lingea team :=( [but there is always somebody who is ... wise as an owl] sorry dear linguistic colleague...

Nathaniel2 Jun 10, 2013:
abstak not meaning to be contrary, but to me "abstak" means the physical symptoms of quitting something like drinking or smoking and that is not what 'cold turkey' means. It only means stopping some habit without any sort of 'grading down'. So frankly 'abstak' seems very wrong to me :)
