Discussion

Mark Nathan (asker) Sep 16, 2006:
I can't quite see what a "network activity report" would consist of in this context. In practical terms what would be the difference between this and the "historisation"?

network activity reportING

I think that -ing is quite important; it is the act of producing reports, rather than the report itself.

Hard to tell without more details of the system, but I would imagine (for example) that the 'historisation' would be a timed list of alarms and responses, whereas a network activity report would involve a list of all traffic on the network (alarms, diagnostics, etc.) — and also, the -ing might imply specifically that it is reported TO somewhere specific (instead of just stored as a local log)

CB has raised a very important point there: it's true indeed that the franglais word 'reporting' is one of those gerunds that FR often misuses (cf. un parking / camping / planning...) in place of what would be a straightforward EN noun.

Unlike th others, though, this is one that I have almost equally frequently come across with its 'normal' gerundive meaning, i.e. 'reporting' in EN too.

In this particular context, I think that is what is required, given the format of the other words in the list, al of them FR nouns having similar value to an English gerundive:
historisation / diffusion / acquisition / emission.

The only 'odd one out' is 'escalades', but the mere fact that it is used in the plural kind of tends to support the idea that they would have used the word 'escaladisation' if it had existed!
Peer comment(s):

agree Charlie Bavington : I'm gonna agree with your assessment of the difference, but in IT, "reporting" in Fr is very often the report itself and NOT the act (qv lots of other Fr words ending in -ing). It could be either, but actually here I feel it probably IS the report.
