It's definitely not "formal reduction". Any art critics out there know what this term is in English?

rewrite the sentence
I would suggest rewriting the sentence, using a phrase such as "reduction of formal elements", or perhaps even "minimalist" to describe the pictures. As far as I know, this term hasn't carried over into English-language art discourse.
See http://dict.leo.org/cgi-bin/dict/urlexp/20031103110021 for discussion of a (somewhat) similar term.

Comment: "form in this case relates to (a lack of) figurative elements (not formal)- I went with just "minimalism" (which pretty much implies there are nearly no figures or forms or anything else in the image for that matter ) - thanks for the help"
